The Red Sox announced the list of non-roster invitees today: RHPs (6): Pedro Beato, Anthony Carter, Chris Carpenter, Jose De La Torre, Terry Doyle, Oscar Villareal
LHPs (1): Chris Hernandez
Infielders (7): Xander Bogaerts, Jonathan Diaz, Mark Hamilton, Justin Henry, Deven Marrero, Lyle Overbay, Drew Sutton
Outfielders (5): Jackie Bradley, Jeremy Hazelbaker, Juan Carlos Linares, Mitch Maier, Ryan Sweeney Marrero is a notable inclusion considering he finished 2012 in Lowell. There are already boatloads of shortstops on the 40-man (Drew, Iglesias, Ciriaco, Holt) and Sutton and Diaz are NRIs, too, so it's not just because they need an extra body at shortstop. Brentz is a notable omission, considering he ended 2012 in Pawtucket. Not sure what's going on there.

Should we read anything into Marrero? If they are aggressive with him would they let him leapfrog Vinicio and start him in Salem or even AA?
Also it's good to see Lackey show up in great shape. Hopefully he can put up a sub 4.00 era and 200 innings.
Edit yes Vinicio

Nice to have a new Spring Training thread to read after shoveling 2' of snow! ;D I wonder about Brentz, though. Guns don't accidentally discharge. You usually have to pull the trigger, no?

#RedSox OF prospect Bryce Brentz shot himself in the leg while cleaning a handgun a few weeks ago. Not on ST roster as a result. 11:39am - 9 Feb 13

Marrero on the invite list surprises me. Signals to me that he's on the JBJ track.

I'd just like to say that I feel like I'm in the best shape of my life. The time away from baseball helped me refocus, and I identified a few key mechanical flaws in my posting last year. I'm just excited to start putting everything into practice.

Should we read anything into Marrero? If they are aggressive with him would they let him leapfrog Vizcaino and start him in Salem or even AA? Also it's good to see Lackey show up in great shape. Hopefully he can put up a sub 4.00 era and 200 innings. Who is Vizcaino? At least we'll get a better assessment of what the Red Sox have in Marrero.

I think he is talking about Jose Vinicio who was in Greenville last year.

It's subjective, of course, but a lot of people - I'm one of them - think of the Vizcaino as the most beautiful stretch of desert in North America:

I wonder about Brentz, though. Guns don't accidentally discharge. You usually have to pull the trigger, no? No, actually. Guns accidentally discharge pretty easily if you are cleaning them without properly unloading and clearing them first. Anyway, the exact same thing happened to a roommate of mine in college. He was an idiot, too.

Or, Brentz, like your roommate, is also an idiot? *Note: going to work on a Saturday night (I work a regular 9-5) means my procrastination techniques are reduced to this idiocy. Yes, my life sucks.

It seems like it's only a big deal because of the idiocy of it. Brentz seems to think that he's going to be ready to go soon. Certainly lucky, could have been so much worse

Well, you know, there are some kinks still to work out here in spring training ... But, back to reality, I was somewhat surprised by Marrero's invite to big league camp, as well. A reminder of a basic rule of mine: don't pay much attention to a college kid's performance during draft year. It's hard to evaluate from the outside ... Guns don't shoot prospects, people shoot prospects.

So is Brentz saying he didn't clear the chamber when cleaning his handgun after hunting or just out shooting?
Because who goes hunting with a handgun?

Because who goes hunting with a handgun? In California its a state law that you have to carry a handgun with you when you go hunting. I do believe its to humanely put the animal out of its misery as quickly as possible.

If your hunting hogs like the picture above you carry a hand gun. If that thing charges you it would take multiple shots to slow it down.

Not if that handgun is a .45, and if you are a very good shot.

Pete Abraham @peteabe Breslow and Doubront will be held back a bit by the #RedSox because of shoulder soreness. Farrell said it was precautionary

Running off the mound, [Buchholz] fielded a ground ball and was running toward first when he came up lame. The right-hander sat on the ground for a few minutes massaging his hamstring and was told to return to the clubhouse. He was followed by a trainer and seemed visibly disappointed.
Buchholz missed about a month during the 2010 season with a left hamstring strain. espn.go.com/blog/boston/red-sox/post/_/id/24678/buchholz-pulls-up-lame-with-hamstring

Alex Speier @alexspeier Buchholz had a mild hamstring strain covering 1B. He's day to day.
