It was a good night for Duke rooters. Zion makes Duke almost likeable.

Another scoreless inning for Darwinzon today.. up to 10 innings so far this spring. Is it too early to get excited about this kid?

Another scoreless inning for Darwinzon today.. up to 10 innings so far this spring. Is it too early to get excited about this kid? It’s never too early to get excited about a kid who didn’t start pitching until he was 15, and has elite spin on his CB and FB along with 70 velocity and elite movement on said FB. His FB movement at that velo, in my lifetime, is matched only by Rivera (who threw a cutter, so you’d expect it), and Daniel Bard, who threw a 2-seam that changed zip codes with its late run. I really can’t think of anyone else like that. Big D is someone we SHOULD be excited about, at the very least just to see how he looks starting against advanced competition. Of course, if you’re talking about “excited over MLB relief role,” I’m with Sarasoxer that late May/early June (9-10 starts in, anticipating 120 total IP this year) sounds right and reasonable. It’s entirely possible they Chris Sale 2011 him, and get him 70-90 MLB innings, with him breaking camp, but my guess is they get him those starts for developmental reasons.

I think he will be the #5 starter sometime in May & it will coincide with Eovaldi being named the Closer.

Persistance ... thy name is dmaineah. Watching members of the 25-man roster start the game and play well for multiple innings was heartening. Breathing easier on Pedey, Nunez, Sale, Barnes, Brasier. “Big-D” fits. Good calll Telson.

Eovaldi is not becoming the closer. It’s just not happening.

My prediction (and it is not rocket science!) - we will be fine. In Cora I trust (and Mookie, and JD, and Sale, and....)
Ready for this season to get underway for keeps!

Team seems to be taking a good long look at Chad de la Guerra. He has shown himself to have some good tools across the board.

Team seems to be taking a good long look at Chad de la Guerra. He has shown himself to have some good tools across the board. Yeah and he does have surprising pop. He has that Yaz high held bat which I would think could hamper reaching pitches below those hands and in. I don't know where he fits tho except as a trade piece or AAA depth in event of injury. I like the looks of Chatham...good size, quick bat and apparent high contact rate. If only we could squeeze a bit more power from him. Maybe this will be the year as I understand the powers are re-working his swing some. Lin has become a favorite.

I think the team saw enough of Lin early in spring training to understand what they have. I agree with others who've pointed out that if he were a righthanded bat, Nuñez wouldn't be on the Sox.

I'm starting to get the feeling the catcher logjam won't be solved going into the regular season.
I'm starting to think that Pedroia will be given extra time to get ready for the season and the roster spot will be open so that all 3 catchers can co-exist as Nunez will platoon with Holt, Devers will play most of the time at 3b, and Swihart can function as emergency backup in the infield.
I don't think they'll call up Lin if they can keep all 3 catchers for a little while longer. Then when Pedroia is ready to come off the DL, I think the Sox will eventually deal a catcher - I'm guessing Swihart.

So hope that they don't deal Swihart. What a luxury for us (lately) having at least a modicum of offense at catcher. Our offense is going to have a bigger burden this year given a likely Mookie and J. D. decline juxtaposed with a very weak bullpen. Let's hope that 'swing for the fences' Devers improves offensively and defensively, Pedey picks up slack and JBJ finds/holds onto the secret. Swihart would be an offsetting offensive boon. Vazquez can still catch 110 games.

Period. Are you trolling us or are you clueless? Do you understand that Nate Eovaldi had offers to be a closer elsewhere and wanted no part of that job? What do you think it looks like if the Sox sign him and then flat out lie to him and make him the closer? Also, how stupid do you think it would be for the Sox to spend $17 million for him to close when the man is capable of throwing six or seven innings per start with excellent results? And what makes you think that JBJ isn't "good enough" to bring back a quality closer in a deal? He's a gold glove caliber defensive CF who had an excellent second half with the bat and is a good bet to at least hit as well as he did in the second half when he fixed his swing. The Red Sox aren't stupid enough to deal JBJ for a "quality closer". Hint for you. JBJ > "quality closer". If the Sox do obtain one in a deal during the 2019 season, it won't be JBJ going in the deal. I mean everybody is entitled to their opinions, but some are just so inane, you can't help but wonder what that person is smoking?

Vazquez can still catch 110 games. It is possible Swihart sticks and Leon goes. I think the Sox are more sold on Vazquez at this point. I do hope Swihart sticks, but I don't have the same appreciation for Leon's gamecalling skills that the Red Sox starting staff has so I can understand if they see things a lot differently than I do. I do think Devers improves a lot this year and I hope by the end of the year that he's in the #3 spot. I sure don't want to see Mitch Moreland there anymore. I hope Pedey picks up the slack. I think Brock Holt is a very important man again this year. I hope he can repeat the solid season he had last year. I don't trust that Pedroia's knee is necessarily going to hold up and even if it does he'll need a good deal of time off. I agree they need those things, plus better offense from catcher, and I do think JBJ will build off of his second half. Initially I wasn't a believer in JBJ. I knew he was starting to hit the ball, but what good does that do you if you constantly hit it into the shift? But JBJ is smart, and I think he started figuring it out and with the tutoring he had in the offseason, I have a feeling he won't be batting 8th or 9th much longer. I also hope that Benintendi continues to improve. His power was non-existent in the 2nd half. They'll need those things to help offset Mookie and JDM acting a bit human and that highly questionable bullpen.
