Slow start to the year for Howlett, but he just hit a home run to left field that the left fielder merely turned and looked at. Very nice display of power.

To try to put Howlett's challenge in perspective, he is 1 for 2 this year against pitchers who are younger than he is.

Dallas Carroll singles on a line drive to center fielder Jarren Duran. Eddie Silva out at home on the throw, center fielder Jarren Duran to catcher Nick Sciortino.
strikeout looking single (to second base), SB, R strikeout swinging

Casas and Howlett are just kids with hardly any minor league experience to speak of. This is about development pure and simple.

If Pedro Castellanos played any position but first I'd be really excited about him, I think.

If Pedro Castellanos played any position but first I'd be really excited about him, I think. Castellanos looks like a better defender than Ockimey. He's a lot leaner and stretches well. I watched the Duran contacts. 3rd inning RHP foul (sharp line drive just right of the 1B bag). Ball called strike single. Ground ball between the second baseman and the bag. Not smoked but hard enough that the second baseman had to angle towards the outfield to get to. Even if the 2nd baseman handled it cleanly (it glanced off his glove), he wasn't going to turn and throw him out. He then stole second and scored. They don't show the lead or the jump but he made it easily. 5th inning defense. Bad decision by a runner trying to score from second. Shallow right/center where Duran had time to line up his throw. Most center fielders make that play. On the other hand the throw was on a line and accurate and got the runner by at least 6 feet. It got a thumbs up from Gonzales. 7th inning RHP ball swinging strike ball single Soft line drive to right field. He then stole second. The play was closer but still clearly safe. 9th inning RHP swinging strike foul lineout to left field. I would have classified it as a soft flyout without much height but the scorer called it a lineout.

Quick notes from prospects who haven't got too much attention lately-
-Zach Schellenger has walked 12 in 5 innings this year. Wow. -Denyi Reyes has really struggled this year. -Portland's ballpark is impossible to hit homeruns in. Proof, Dalbec has only 2 homeruns so far this year. -Outside observation looking in, Tanner Houck seems to have a leg up on the competition on "the next guy to replace Porcello in 2020." Seems to be more of a safe bet to stick as a starter than Hernandez. Houck's command is way ahead of Darwinzon Hernandez, atm. -Can't wait until Jay Groome returns this year.

Looking at Denyi's season line is pretty ugly. That said, he's been excellent in two starts (11.0 IP 5H 2ER 2BB 9K) and awful in two others. We'll see which version shows up more over the course of the season, but his struggles haven't been consistent in this tiny sample, he's also shown the ability to thrive too.

Yeah, I feel like there's got to be something wrong with him given the exponential spike in his walks, but it could just be that the stuff needed to be challenged. That was still a pretty aggressive promotion though - he essentially skipped Salem. Dalbec had 6 home runs in 29 games in Portland last year, 2 in 21 games this year. Not sure Portland has changed that much. Probably just a SSS thing. April vs. August. I'm sure it's tough to get into a groove as well when you're literally losing four-game stretches to things like snow.
