2019 Draft Signing Period
|
Post by jimed14 on Jun 13, 2019 12:23:52 GMT -5
Lucky kid. Not sure I get the logic of this article. He has been dedicated to playing baseball and his dream is to play for the Sox at Fenway. So he gets drafted hy his dream team, his legacy team, his ancestral team, and turns it down for another year at college? I wonder how Dewey really feels?!?! Couldn’t an arrangement be made for him to finish college part time, with the Sox paying his tuition and fees? That would he a great business decision. Or wouldn’t his draft $$ do that and them some? Sounds like he doesn't have much of a worry about money, especially with Dewey as a grandfather.

And if the Sox need someone to sign for $5,000 next year for cap manipulation, Berardino could be the guy. Exactly. There's a good possibility that he winds up getting drafted again from the Red Sox. If he's not exactly a mega-prospect, you can see the Sox grabbing him in a round that used for saving money or simply just being a 30-something pick. Perhaps there's a "check back with me next year or whatever and I'll sign" type of thing going on.

If he's not a real prospect then he's better off finishing at Bentley on schedule, playing for the team there, and doing his thing. If he wants to make a go of it after graduating then more power to him, but his senior year of college is probably more valuable to him then baseballing for $1750 a month or whatever.
And it's "his dream" doesn't necessarily make it a good idea. Like, my dream is also to play centerfield for the Red Sox but it would not have been a good idea to skip my senior year of college to pretend to do that, because I am an extremely bad baseball player.

And draftees with Red Sox relations have a history of not signing and then being drafted by the Sox again the next year (e.g. Nick Lovullo, Jordan Wren).

I saw they signed them yesterday on Fangraphs transactions, but I like waiting until the official release statement. I am very excited we got them signed. Along with Lugo it appears at slot!

In addition to Song, I'm really curious about Cannon's bonus as it has big implications for the rest of our draft. I could see him signing anywhere from the slot value to about $1.5M which is a range of $230,000 that would be really nice to have to spend elsewhere (Rounds 11-16).

If they pay full slot, I like this pick a LOT less. $1.5 feels about right, but I wouldn't be shocked if he actually came in slightly less, $1.4/1.3 mill.

If they inked him for $1.4M and had a bit of savings from Song, Scroggins, and Scott (and presuming Bell is a slot guy), they should be able to sign Keane for $400k (hopefully that does it), and ideally two more guys in the $250-$350k range. That’s a solid draft haul, especially if a few more HSers in the mid-teens to early 20s sign. IDK about Cellucci as a sophomore, but it’s possible; Loubier, Roberts, and Anu would be awfully nice. I’m happy with the approach they took, particularly nabbing Song, who has real upside and seems to be an exceptionally disciplined and mature young man from a good family. I’m a big fan of Lugo, who looks like he can stay at SS with some work and has a lot of 50-60 tools with no true weakness. That trio of Flores, Lugo, and Bonaci means some talented upside SSs are in the system with no rush, given Bogey’s deal and steady play. I think Cannon turns out to be a *hitter*, even if it’s not a great power profile. And their pitching in this draft (Song, Zeferjahns, and Keane if they sign him, plus potentially Bell who I think has some gas) seems much more upside-oriented than usual...risky but worth it. Great job for a team with a crappy position/pool. They definitely got more talent than might be expected. Let’s hope the J2 IFA period yields a bunch of signings along the lines of last year. System’s definitely on the upswing, particularly with Casas and Duran (and Ward) looking great and several others showing potential.

I love it when the “Draft History” tab for the current year starts getting draftees highlighted in green. Somehow it seems even more “official” than when I read an article, tweet or post about a player officially signing. I’m weird, but that’s me.
Thanks to all the staff at the site who keep huge volumes of information current.

Oooh nice! I wonder how this changes things for Mike's predictions. That's another $200k!

Thats huge....nice call on the bonus Joel. Honestly, I was thinking $1.5M would have been great so this is awesome news for the rest of our draft. If Keane's asking price is something like 600K-700k we could actually meet that and still have a little more to play with...

Welp, didn't see that one coming. Well they clearly like the guy so hopefully he can stay healthy and impress. I wonder if they will try him as a starter for a bonus like that or they see him as a reliever all the way...
