Tanner Houck with 9 Ks through 4 innings. The slider has looked especially filthy. Fastball sitting around 94 and moving well. Opposing batters are fouling a lot of them backwards.

Been watching the game online, and this is probably the best I've seen Houck this season. His slider, as Addam mentioned, has been on point today.

SeaDogs are being annoying. They've put runners in scoring position every inning but haven't scored.

Houck's ERA is a a bit out of line for a guy with 58 strikeouts, 19 walks, and only four homers allowed in 55 1/3. I ran a really basic FIP equation and it came out at 3.19.

Two more strikeouts in the sixth for Houck, giving him 11 (a career high). He'd struck out nine previously this year once as well as three times last year. Fourth time in five starts that he's struck out at least seven.

I feel like Houck has mixed in just enough poor starts to skew his overall numbers and dim his prospect shine. He's been really solid in his last three starts:

It worked but I'm not so sure about the strategy of IBB to Duran there.

Portland lost 4-3 in 11. I've replayed the game winning play at home several times and it appeared that Romanski tagged the runner before he scored.
Mike Antonelis thought he was safe.

Albert Feliz hit three home runs in the DSL Red Sox 1 game. Feliz had the fifth largest bonus from last year.

So Portland ended up with only 5 hits, all singles, but they walked 13 times. Ended up with only 3 runs because they went 0-15 with RISP.

110 pitches is surprising for a highly ranked prospect pitcher in AA.

Three Thaddeus, I mean Free Faddeus. Oh, whatever, you know what I mean.
I'm excited to see what he can do at the next level.

Also, Jake Cosart back on the RP prospect scene, with much better control and still getting plenty of whiffs. Hoping he can put in 25-30 quality IP in AA and get the bump to Pawtucket. He’s getting up there in age now but he’s always had good stuff.

He's been really solid in his last three starts: 19IP 15H 5ER 4BB 25K He’s getting a few more whiffs than last year and he’s significantly cut his walk rate. Hoping he’s working out how to command and utilize the 4FB to go with the 2FB and SL. Still think he’d benefit from getting the CH in order or maybe even trying a SF, though I’m not sure how his arm angle would affect SF movement. His low-3/4 isn’t great for 4FB rise, and it makes sense he scrapped the CB cuz that’s not a great pitch unless it’s over-the-top. Arm slot works awful well with the SL though. I mean, they have the *perfect* mirror image model for him in Sale: 2/4, SL, CH, all low-3/4. Clearly it works, as long as he can command. Still appreciate his trying to use spin data to maximize his repertoire though. Tonight was a nice step.
