Brian Johnson is easily the best out of the Weber, Velazquez, Smith group that has filled in at the 5th spot of the rotation.
It seems like you might survive with him as the 5th starter until Eovaldi is back.

Shutdown inning after the offense puts up a five spot. Don’t look now, the Boston Red Sox are good.

Idk how he’s doing it throwing 87-88, especially down the pipe, but Johnson’s having a day so far. It’s be a big plus if he could stabilize the 5 spot until Eovaldi’s back in form.

OK here write this down. I prioritize signing Devers over Mookie. Mookie has to adjust to every pitcher pitching him offspeed outside like they did to Xander now and he is having trouble being elite doing it. But Devers can hit anything in any spot to any direction. I think Devers is the next Papi and while he can be good to better at 3B, imagine how many MVPs that could be. He's Carlos Delgado in my eyes, offensively. The swings are nearly identical. Not a bad comp. But Delgado was a butcher in the field and Devers has a chance to be plus (he's already positive in DRS and UZR).

No you can only compare Delgado and Devers swings as hitters. They're completely different players in general.
Vazquez was smiling because he knew he got a cheapie.

Count CVAZ with 10 homeruns before the ASG as one of my biggest surprises of this year. Congrats to him.

JDM hits a ball 109 mph for an out. Vazquez hits a ball 95 for a 340 foot HR. haha
And JBJ continues to murder the ball. 107 on the single.

Man, I just dig it when Bradley is stroking the ball like this. I just freakin dig it.

pesky homer, but the fact that vaz can even drive the ball the other way now (whether it's a combination of the juiced ball, approach or whatever else) is a promising development.

And remember, Weber had one game like this too and we know how that ended up...I hope Eovaldi can get back soonish.

The sample size in the minors was too small to judge anything this year.

That was a play by Chavis where if he was 3 inches taller... Sometimes height matters at first base to stretch out and get outs.

What's kind of crazy is that they only need Johnson to be like a 5 ERA guy to be an improvement.

Sometimes height matters at first base to stretch out and get outs. yea theres been a select view plays where you can see that. but overall he's played a good first base imo. he even impressed me at second, i'd like to see him play more there in the future. If he could stick at second base and hit to like a 110 wRC+ he'd be pretty valuable...less so at first base.

If say a Pearce was over there, he can probably reach that ball that bounced high after hitting the ground.

Stretching also makes you a smaller target.

Was just saying that because if they do hit similarly, those 4-7 win seasons for Delgado could become 7-10+ win seasons for Devers. I do agree that their swings are pretty similar. Delgado was a little more pull-heavy and more patient (although we’ll see with Devers because he’s so young, I could see the walks bump up significantly as he becomes more dangerous). It’s a pretty good comp offensively, though. Devers (probably by nature of more even field distribution and better speed) is probably going to be a better true-talent BABIP guy, too. Delgado was basically average despite the hard contact; Devers I think will settle into the .320-.330 range, maybe better for a little while. So he might hit for a little less power, but higher BAs, with similar OBP. And really, who knows, the power has plenty of time to come. I def think you’re right about the defense, though. Devers has been plus in the field since his first-month struggles. He’s almost certainly going to get even better for a while, until age starts sapping his mobility. But he should be adding 1-1.5 wins, versus losing 1-1.5 for Delgado (boy, was he bad defensively). So yeah, 7-10 wins for Devers seems (bizarrely?) reasonable. I read an article on fg about Ronald Acuña Jr, basically looking at 20-y/o call-ups who met rookie-qualifying PAs. Those guys have something like a 10-20% HOF rate.
