I root for Sale every time he pitches and expect near greatness, but I am still on the record that this is a mistake given 1) That I covet Cole over Sale (so my malfunction if I'm wrong) and, more important 2) The extensive negative data on long-term high dollar extensions for pitchers over 30 combined with Sale's injury history. You can't just assume that they can sign Cole though (especially to a deal they're comfortable with) and that's what you have to do when deciding to let Sale walk. Always true - but the evidence on extending a pitcher in Sale's age range with that dollar and year commitment is overwhelmingly bad. If you're going to do that as, say, a sunk cost, I'd rather go all in on the younger guy without a shoulder problem - shoulders being much tougher to repair than elbows. If you miss on him, Ryu - who I wouldn't give more than 3 years to, but given this year's performance will likely get more - and Odorizzi, who would cost less than Sale's deal (my guess), are still free agents, too, and Sale's market as was mentioned, may be even less. If all those options are too pricey, you could take the discount from Porcello and invest the difference in some power relievers on 2-3 year deals like the team to the south did and go with more 5 inning starts, preferably with openers on selected starters. Finally, you can deal from the farm - Dalbec, Casas and Mata could top a multiplayer deal for a very good starter with 2 or more years of control. Heresy, I know, but how many of those guys will be ave major leaguers?

MFY climb out of a 5 run hole - now tied.
We are going against a 6 plus ERA guy today - the bats need to do more here.

Xander plays short with the same style and grace that JBJ plays center and Mookie plays right. Such a pleasure to watch defensive excellence in so many positions game after game. on the eye test Xander has gotten better I think, and he generally makes all the routine plays. But defensive runs still hates him so idk. He's -9 DRS this year. UZR/150 has him positive though.

Not a good time for the GIDP bug to hit - we need to string some hits together.

110 mph out for JBJ. One of those days.
I guess the Sale extension is ok now after striking out 6 out of the last 9 batters, sitting 96.

As usual Sale competes his butt. Struggles through first 3 but gives Sox 6 and a chance to win this game

Nunez' at bats are always the worst. even if they end in a good result or bad result, they are just consistently bad at bats

3 runs on 9 hits against a scrub arm. My how our bats can vanish, especially with men on base

Fenway sounding like a morgue again ( at least on the mlb.tv feed)

Fenway sounding like a morgue again ( at least on the mlb.tv feed) I feel bad for them at this point. They have been much better than their perception. Doesn't matter if they lose today, they still won the series which is all you should really care about over the course of a season. Youkilis said it best, it's not about winning every game, it's about winning every series. Something to that effect.

Meanwhile, the Yankees come back from 5-1 to tie it 6-6 against a bad team and the Indians are holding a 4-1 lead over the Royals.

This offense badly needs Mookie to figure things out again. .218 against lefties is remarkable.

JBJ has really been on fire with the bat. It's amazing how quickly he can go from awesome to putrid and vice versa.

This game is wild. Brian Johnson pinch running for Brock Holt.

Brian Johnson is faster than he looks but that's still not a good idea.

I wonder who comes in and plays defensively at first base? Will they leave former first baseman Brian Johnson in there?
