I remember Vernon but not Spence. I was just kidding I have no idea who they are. Vernon is close to Hall of Fame quality but not quite. He played for the Sox a couple of years towards the end of his career. I have no idea who Spence was. EDIT: Just looked, Vernon was a career 116 OPS+ first baseman. He played 221 games for the Sox in his age 38& 39 seasons. Spence had a small career with a few good years sandwiched around WW II. He also played corner OF for the Sox in 1948 but was out of baseball after 1949.

When I was a kid I put together complete sets of the TOPPs baseball cards for 1957 and 1958. Ted Williams was number 1 in 1957. I had multiple copies of the Williams card and sold one for the magnificent price of $1.00. I believe Mickey Vernon was the 1B for the Washington Senators. After I went to college my mother moved my stuff, including my TOPPs cards, to the basement and when there was a storm the basement flooded and my cards were destroyed..

I friend of my older brother gave me complete sets from 1951 thru 1955. I had at least 1 of every card with a lot of duplicates. I then collected from 1956 thru 1961. I had about 10 Erector Set boxes full. I traded them for a pile of 12" records. His mother then threw them out when he went into the Army and yes I would have had at least one Mickey Mantle rookie card.

I remember Vernon but not Spence. I was just kidding I have no idea who they are. Now I actually remember seeing Mickey Vernon play (but not Spence). Folks, I'm sorry, but this Sox team is making a travesty of the game as I know it. Nine, count 'em, nine pitchers last night to get 27 outs. Night after night this team's pitching is not so much a structured whole as it is a non-ending conga line. The limit on September call-ups coming next year can't come fast enough, and the organization has some very tough decisions to make this winter about how to plan for next year to accommodate the new reality. I wonder how many arms this season is ultimately going to compromise?

Chris Mason @bychrismason ·
Xander Bogaerts is the 2nd SS in history to have a 30+ HR, 50+ 2B season.
The only other?
Alex Rodriguez.

Damn shame.

i know we're all checked out and don't even have a phillies game thread, but terrible terrible job by Cora last two innings. Gorkys up bases loaded 1 out no PH, ERod up no PH.
ERod predictably starts tiring the next inning after a boatload of strikeouts; and now he walks in a run, his gem is on the line and he's out of the game.

The site should have a game thread, no matter what has happened. I am thinking it was just an oversight. Cora has had some problems this year, no doubt.

at least Taylor got out of any more trouble. would've been a crying shame if Eddie got more runs added to his line tonight.

Not watching. Took a road trip to Auburn to watch football. 2018 baseball sure was more compelling. Anytime I missed a game I felt cheated. Not so much this year starting in August for me.
