Pete passed away today. Not sure what else to say here but it deserved a thread.
If ever faced with what he was, may I do so with a third of the courage he did.

My father-in-law was diagnosed with ALS a couple months before Frates. The Ice Bucket Challenge and everything associated with it came at an important and emotional time for all of us - lots of our friends were kind enough to make videos, and his entire office made one at his retirement party. The amazing research that's been done from the money he helped to raise was inspiring, but every time I saw him it hit so close to home. I wouldn't wish that suffering on anybody, and to do so in such a public way amazes me.
My heart goes out to his family. One of the hardest things about the disease is the amount of physical support - not just emotional support, but, hard physical work - is associated in caring for someone with ALS. It is an awful disease, and Pete's work went a long way in the work toward helping find a cure.
