Ryan Weber lives to pitch another day. I think it’s a good choice by Bloom. You’d have to think that Reyes will make it through waivers.

That’s a pretty damn solid deal for the Sox. I was willing to let Mitch walk, but at that price, you definitely bring him back.

I hoped that taking a chance on Jose Siri who the Reds just waived might be an option, but they're probably not going to use up many more 40 man spots on guys like that.
I wonder if this is an indication that they think a Mookie trade was going to happen.

I love this deal. Moreland provides so much to the team. He’s a left-handed bat that they didn’t have at the position, he’s a Gold Glove caliber defender that can work with Dalbec and Chavis on the position, a great clubhouse presence, and evidently has a very close relationship with Devers. If he can avoid the injury bug and hit anything close to what he did last year before his injury, then he’s an absolute steal at 2.5 million.

I’ve got nothing to complain about
Cheap club option too. A little surprised they DFA’d Reyes but I imagine AAA may give him some trouble and he probably should clear

No real downside. I mean, ideally, you'd want somebody who is more of a truly a middle-of-the-order guy at 1b, rather than a platoon guy, but for the price, he's productive. You know with him, you'll get a hot start, injuries, a midseason slump, and a bat that revives toward the end of the season.
In a way he's kind of a 1b and sane version of what Bernie Carbo would give the Sox. A .240 BA with a respectable amount of walks and some pop.
And like Carbo, he's one helluva a PH. They both had memorable PH 3 run HRs in the World Series.
And the price is certainly right. I'm kind of surprised somebody didn't pick him up, even to stash him on the bench. He's a useful player.
Hopefully the Sox don't need to rely on him too much. I would hope we see Chavis at 2b a lot and Dalbec platooning at 1b and gradually taking on more of 1b if he hits enough.
This also tells me that Josh Naylor would be less likely a target for the Red Sox and Margot more likely.

Thank goodness, I was scared of a world without a former Rangers first baseman. This will make 7 of the last 8 years with a guy we signed out of Texas. Gives them a chance to develop a new one for us.

Great contract. They could potentially buy a c-level prospect with him if he hits well the first couple of months.

Sounds like a super utility role of some sort for Chavis and Mitch keeping 1B warm for Dalbec.

Moreland has so many pluses that aren't evident in his raw stats that it's hard to keep track of them all.
FG has him as a career -3.1 RAA, consistent with his 99 wRC+. But he's +21.4 runs when you include base/out situation, which is 3.8 R/650 that's invisible to WAR. When you also include inning/score situation, he goes up to +45.5 runs. That's 0.7 invisible WAR per 650 PA.
A lot of that "clutch" is because he hits good pitching better than expected given his overall numbers, which makes him extra valuable in the post-season, if you get there. Being a good defender also adds postseason value.
He has tremendous numbers as both a pinch-hitter and as a DH, which is a rare talent.
His platoon split isn't big, which means there will probably be days where it makes sense to play him vs. LHP and rest Devers or Benintendi instead. (It's a SSS, but he hasn't hit lefties well as a DH or PH, alas.)
And of course there's his clubhouse contribution.
The only hidden negative is that he needs adequate lineup protection. As I interpret the numbers, that means you can't hit him in front of Peraza; anyone else will be OK. The Sox seem to know this, as they have often put him in the heart of the order a bit inexplicably. (I worked up the methodology for assessing this back when I worked for them; 50/50 whether Zack Scott remembered it, or they developed their own version.)
I like this lineup if no one is traded:
Betts Bogaerts Devers Martinez Moreland
Vazquez Bradlley Peraza Benintendi
The trick here is that some of the best hitting of Beni's career came when he was hitting after Mookie last year, excluding his PA leading off the game. So start the season with him as the second lead-off guy, a low-pressure job. If he breaks out as we hope, you put him 2nd and move everyone down one, leaving Peraza at 8 and moving JBJ to 9.
If they trade JBJ, you'd have Beni hitting 7 and JBJ's replacement 8 or 9.

Eric, I like this thinking. I always felt confident with MM’s smart reads and quick responses on defense. He makes the IF better, and also works well with an aggressive CV. He will also help Chavis and Dalbec become better at the position. And he can hit. Beni in place of JBJ as 2nd leadoff should work great. I am curious about batting XB second after the Betts, Devers success and Bogaerts break out. Why not repeat that lineup?

I'd prefer they keep Chavis in the minors if they're going to try to teach him to outfield, and carry Lin and an actual outfielder for the MLB club. No issues with keeping Moreland at that price.

Good solid move. It's taking a long time, but the depth is getting there. You can't complain about getting a guy that can easily give you 1 bwar for 3 million and an option year.
I really like the idea of moving Chavis around. His bat will play a lot better at 2B, the OF and sometimes at 1B than full-time at 1B.

Is Peraza really going to start? Why not play Chavis at 2nd? His glove seemed ok last year, and he is a massive upgrade at the plate.

Xander is great at knocking in his teammates, but he's even better at providing them with RBI opportunities. Devers is so good at knocking people in that, when combined with his low walk totals, he's not great as a table-setter.
Basically, you're turning a number of Devers gets an XBH, Xander walks sequences into the opposite.

Is Peraza really going to start? Why not play Chavis at 2nd? His glove seemed ok last year, and he is a massive upgrade at the plate. If Peraza bounces back and Chavis hits like he did for most of last season, then no, Chavis isn't a massive upgrade. Consider that Steamer projects Chavis to be a 1.0 win player and Peraza at 0.6 WAR, and that's with Chavis getting 200 more PA. So it's basically a wash. That is only one of a range of outcomes, but the point is that it's no given that Chavis is a better option. That said, it's not like the roster is constructed such that Chavis couldn't play his way into the starting 2B gig, which is kind of the point.
