I think that during spring training, it is good to fantasize trades that could help the team before the regular season begins, and this is a trade that I have thought about. Not saying it will happen, but just throwing it in the air.
This would be a three team trade. Texas needs a steady center fielder (Hamilton gone as FA) and St. Louis needs a shortstop. (Furcal is hurt) Neither team has great options to fill those needs. Also, the Rangers have the best prospect in baseball in shortstop Jurickson Profar, so there has been talk of dealing Elvis Andrus in order to give the starting job to Profar. And the Sox need some more depth at First Base and Pitching, so here is what I have put together:
Texas Receives:
CF Jacoby Ellsbury from BOS
(Another add-in player)
St. Louis Receives:
SS Elvis Andrus from TEX
(Another add-in player)
Boston Receives:
2 Prospects from St. Louis- Maybe SP Trevor Rosenthal and 1B Matt Adams- Gives us a potential Power Starter and Average to Above-Average First Baseman who are both nearly MLB ready
(Another add-in player, maybe CF Jon Jay)
These are main players that the deal would involve. There also could be a few supplemental players in order to complete the deal if it were to happen.
Yes, it does leave us with a bit of a hole in the outfield, but it also greatly enhances our starting rotation and first base situation. Rosenthal could be a front-line starting power pitcher; if he can't start, he could be a dominant closer. Adams could be a very solid first baseman, hitting around .280 with 20-25 home runs. Bradley is nearly MLB ready, so if Ellsbury were to be dealt, he would almost be ready to step in. Plus, if we also got Jon Jay, he would be an adequate replacement for Ellsbury until Bradley is ready. Jon Jay though is probably not available after a strong 2013 season. Don't forget that Ellsbury is in a contract year and is unlikely to be re-signed, so getting prospects out of him would be ideal.
Really, I think this trade makes sense for each team involved.
Tell me what you think, and don't forget to throw up in the air a potential trade idea.
