I think this is one of the more obvious "modern" pitching changes in the game - if you have one pitch that's clearly your best pitch, why would you only throw it like 25% of the time because you "need to pitch off your fastball"? At this point, the book is out on him, so it's not a matter of batters catching on or something. "You need to pitch off your fastball to establish your secondaries" was the baseball version of "you need to establish the run to open up the pass."

4/21 1. Matt Barnes 2. Garrett Whitlock 3. Matt Andriese 4. Phillips Valdez (+2) 5. Adam Ottovino (+2) 6. Hirokazu Sawamura (-2) 7. Darwinzon Hernandez (-2) 8. Austin Brice 9. Josh Taylor (If Astudillo was on the Sox he would be ahead of Taylor) Valdez really bounced back after that one blowup a week ago. Otto starting to look good and the advanced metrics back it up. Not a slight on Sawamura or Darwinzon. Side note, Sawamura’s advanced metrics don’t look great. I didn’t really factor that in, this is more Valdez and Otto pitching their way up the list, but thought it interesting to note. Any position players you'd put ahead of Taylor? I think maybe if we let Renfroe be the mop up guy and Josh Taylor be the bench bat we would get better results than the current configuration.

I also think it’s time to start thinking about removing Josh Taylor from the roster immediately. Bloom needs to do it for Cora’s own good. Taylor's BABIP: .556 so it's gonna come down and also, it's April.

And given that the Sox have alternatives, they don’t have to have a long leash.

Taylor's been unlucky but nine relievers is kinda dumb. Hard to keep that many pitchers fresh and getting innings for the 14th-best pitcher in the system isn't worthwhile generally.

Yesterday’s game struck me as evidence again that they could use another bench guy. Franchy is out in the fifth... leaving you Renfroe and Plawecki for 6-9 in a game that was 1-run until Taylor. Granted it is not really a lineup you need pinch hitters for, but there is not a lot of margin for injury, bad matchup, etc etc. I don’t think it is a crisis, obviously, but I’d rather have one more bench guy than Taylor. And yes... I’d drop Taylor before Brice, lefty/righty distinction or no.

I'd say it's a matter of time before Santana comes up and he's a switch hitter, which is a good thing to have coming off the bench.

I think Taylor has a more clear role than Brice so I'd keep him if all was equal, but I'm not putting Brice through waivers just to keep Taylor. I also think that, in normal times, there'd be someone in Triple-A off to a hot start to the season who would be forcing the issue. Like, if Gonsalves had like a 0.50 ERA and 16 Ks in 14 innings then there'd be some pressure. Without that I think it gives a little bit longer leash in the early season.

And given that the Sox have alternatives, they don’t have to have a long leash. He gave up 15 hits, 13 of them were singles and the other 2 were doubles. Again, it's April! I would be worried if he was sitting 89 mph or something but that's not the case. Crazy sh*t happens in small sample sizes and I for one would worry if my FO makes roster decisions based on that.

More often than not, though, it is 92-93 and straight. His slider, too, can be ok, but many days is just a little loop. And his command is not very good. His pure stuff impresses me less than that of Valdez or Brice. But I have *always* thought Taylor was infinitely replaceable. He had great numbers in 2019, but I think that was a fluke... they weren’t in line with his career numbers.

Dalbec was pretty good in the College World Series. www.ncaa.com/news/baseball/article/2016-06-21/college-world-series-tyler-buffett-bobby-dalbec-go-head-headNot a serious recommendation but would be fun to see him on the mound sometime this year.

Completely understand that you're not being serious, but just as an FYI for those who weren't around, Dalbec has said he does not like pitching and was glad to stop doing it.

While Taylor had mostly given up singles, he's been getting hit hard. baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/josh-taylor-657031?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlbSSS caveat still applies, but he's pretty squarely in the hot seat if they needed to make a move.

Why doesn't Dalbec like to pitch? Does he prefer hitting/fielding? Worry about injury? Or just hate being on the mount at all?

I also think it’s time to start thinking about removing Josh Taylor from the roster immediately. Bloom needs to do it for Cora’s own good. This kind of exacerbates the problem. It's not that I think that Taylor needs to go immediately, it's just that whenever he's been put in a game I'm thinking "WTF is Taylor coming in?". I wouldn't mind seeing him in some more garbage time situations against more LHH so maybe he figures it out on the fly, but game critical situations against RHH like Abreu on Sunday are automatic failure right now. Taylor has actually pitched quite well vs LHH, unfortunately with the 3 batter rule it is much more difficult to use him as a situational lefty.

Why not though? Why can't you go to your "A team" in a high-leverage situation when you have a 20-30% of winning; why can you only use them in situations where you have a 20% or 10% or 5% chance of losing? It seems like a classic case of the loss aversion fallacy.

If you were forced to put Larry Lucchino on the mound for one inning, you'd much prefer to do it when you have a 5% chance of winning than when you have a 95% chance of winning.

Barnes Whitlock Andriese
Sawamura/Ottavino/Valdez/Hernandez
Brice Taylor
With Whitlock having a reduced workload I’m getting close to settling on Andriese as the primary 8th inning guy. He throws strikes and has great secondary stuff, I feel pretty comfortable with him
I keep forgetting about Brasier too, if he comes back as the fireball version of him that could be big

This is a little different from the "Andriese taught him his new changeup" story I've been seeing. It links to this WEEI article: The pitcherlist article also says: "Whitlock may never have the repertoire to be a starter. That may be up to the progression of his slider." I wonder if he might end up in that Beeksian 3-inning role. He's sort of almost there already.
