They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). The point is to make these threads worth participating in and fun for all posters, from our long-time fixtures to people just signing up today. -The Management

Hard to build momentum when you have to face this juggernaut 6 out of the first 9 games of the season.

I keep thinking back to when there wasn’t that much separation between Sandy Leon and Cvaz. Vasquez has made himself one of my all-time favorites by working, working, working... he just keeps improving.

I would expect much different results against Matt Harvey this afternoon.

Vasquez has made himself one of my all-time favorites by working, working, working... he just keeps improving. Have to also credit Dombrowski. Some of us (I'm guilty of this) were clamoring for Blake Swihart to get the opportunity to become the catcher, but between Dombrowski and Alex Cora (who also deserves credit), they were correctly able to judge that Vazquez was going to assert himself as the primary catcher, because honestly, during most of 2018, I had a lot of uncertainty regarding this, but I think Cora decided to play Vazquez regularly during the post-season and Vazquez has run with the job since. I think at the time of 2018 some saw Leon as the guy who could start because his defense was superior despite his bat, and others saw Swihart as a guy who could hit if given a chance and could be adequate behind the plate while Vazquez was seen as a guy who couldn't hit and wasn't the receiver that Leon was, so it's also a credit to Vazquez that he has become one of the best catchers in baseball.

Hard to build momentum when you have to face this juggernaut 6 out of the first 9 games of the season. Baltimore is like a 100 meter sprinter running the mile....fast start, but then he dies after 200 meters then gets lapped by the entire field of runners....

Hot Damn !! That 2003 AL playoff video posted by jkfer98 was great to watch. It is great to able to be reminded of just how great those games were. And the pitch from Lowe to strike out Long to end the series is one of my favorite all time video moments. That was a filthy 2 seamer !!
Thanks for posting !!

Amazing thing...being a Sox fan. The highs and lows of being a Sox fan over the years. Shame about that 2003 team, they could have been the ones to break the (not real) curse.

It’s cool watching you guys reminisce about games from 14 years ago. I’m only 22 so I don’t have memories dating that far back. My first vivid Sox memory is Clay Bucholtz’s no hitter in his 2nd start in 2007. After that some big gaps up until 2013 WS. I remember the Will Middlebrooks obstruction call and the Koji Wong pickoff like it was yesterday. Really started watching frequently starting around 2018. Can’t imagine having 20 years worth of Sox memories taking up space in my brain, but I’m sure I’ll get there one day.

I wanted Vazquez to start over Leon because I thought there was a modicum of hope for him where Leon was a AAAA guy. Admittedly, I thought Swihart was the man for the job and was frustrated they would never put him behind the dish. Whoops.

We have folks that go back to Ted Williams days, and a bunch from Fisk/Tiant/Bill Lee days. I'm a 1990 era formative fan, just long enough to build a self-loathing and then fully understand and celebrate 4 WS. Saw 200+ games in person in the 90s (the bleachers were a little rough-and-tumble) and actually haven't been back to Fenway since 2002. Glad to see we're expanding the generations and perspective of fans posting here!

Orioles are due for a fistful of regression One of Pantera's best albums, that. That could be used to describe pretty much every album they ever did, at least after all the glam stuff. Also for those who don’t know, today’s game is mlb’s free game of the day so you can watch it on mlbtv for gratis.

Admittedly I was a Leon guy, Vasquez is growing on me, but for all the accolades about his defense, he's never struck me as a great receiver. He has improved significantly though, his arm is his carrying defensive tool, and I think he's gotten better at calling a game and framing. I think the Sox ruined Swihart when they started trying to make him a super utility guy while in the majors, he never came back from that injury the same guy, but I still contend we should have traded Swihart for Hamels back in the day when that rumor was floating around...

I put that together right at the beginning of quarantine when my final semester of classes was winding down and I was bored AF lol. It really is one of the most overlooked postseason series' of all time. Outside of game 2 every game had a crazy finish, and that doesn't even factor in all of the absurdities that occurred (interference/obstruction, Tek blocking the plate, the collision in game 5). Those crowds were DIFFERENT back then too - I'm sure there are a number of reasons why that's the case. What a great time for baseball.

Well, boys and girls, how much freakin fun is it to be Red Sox fan right now! A two run lead in the first inning. Life is good. Life is very good.

Eduardo's fastball velocity is looking a bit slow, hopefully we see it ramp back up in time.
