They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). The point is to make these threads worth participating in and fun for all posters, from our long-time fixtures to people just signing up today. -The Management

I believe this will be Dunn's first time pitching in Boston since he was over at Chestnut Hill.

It's kinda weird that the Red Sox are third in the AL in homers, yet Renfroe, Cordero, and Dalbec have combined for exactly 1 of them in 141 PAs.
I'll leave the glass half-full/glass half-empty interpretations to the imagination.

Could be they just are not very good. Or... could be that they are off to a bad start and it is essential to put them way in rearview before they get hot.

How good are their starters after Cole? How are their perpetual injured players going to stay healthy enough to compete effectively? I really enjoy seeing the Yankees in last place....THE LONGER IN LAST THE BETTER!! Close games are exciting, but I would be fine beating them 10-0 19 times per year.

Can Pivetta stop the walks? His luck will soon run out if he can’t find some control. The Sox are the better team I think so I am hoping for a series win.

If it wasn’t for pure luck he’d be having an awful season. All eyes on Duran next month On a much less gloomy note... Red Sox Barrel% leaders: 1) Devers 2) Dalbec 3) Martinez

Does Franchy’s performance/promise have any bearing on that? What I mean is, isn’t the Mets return really just a question of how much they valued Lee? Maybe this is not the correct way of looking at it, but I kind of take the Mets part in this to be the Sox sending Lee for Winckowski and the PTBNL pack.

Triumph of hope over experience: got a Renfroe/Franchy OF.
Add in Marwin at 1b, they have Arroyo and Dalbec (+Plawecki) on the bench. If this is a rest day for Dalbec, it could only be 1/2 a rest if the midgame pull of Franchy becomes a pattern. Is Arroyo resting, or is this avoiding having him face a righty? Because I’d rather have him face the righty than Renfroe.
While they run on all cylinders, these things may not matter, but I don’t like the bottom end of this roster construction... or, maybe, I don’t like the managing that has Renfroe/Franchy play at the same time, which is unnecessary if you go with Arroyo. Then at least you have the platoon guy ready as a sub in the event of a pitching change and Marwin moving wherever he’s needed.

It's not that different, but what can possibly alleviate the issue is if they have a 14th offensive player or 5th player on the bench. Santana fits that bill. He's a switch hitter so if they start of with Cordero, he gets PH for by Renfroe and then a righty reliever comes in, they can make the move to Santana. The other thing is that Marwin Gonzalez has been starting so many games he hasn't been on the bench to PH. I'm hoping we see less of him in a full-time role as time goes on but Cora seems intent on resting somebody just about every day, which could pay dividends down the road, but it's hard to see him implementing yet another player in the mix. I would think that one of Santana or Gonzalez would be on the bench to take that AB you worry about when the platoon advantage from Cordero/Renfroe goes away late in the game.

I’m actually less uneasy when they *are* platooning. It is when they start together that I get confused, because even with the current roster it is not necessary. Even if Dalbec needs the day off, putting Marwin at first, you could keep Kiké in CF. I guess I don’t see sitting BOTH Dalbec and Arroyo to play two very split-split guys side by side. If it was once, I’d say fine, flukey thing. But Cora appears to have no prob playing them like that. It is sort of like his Taylor thing... one of those moves that he favors despite previous outcomes.

I'm just trying to figure out why Dalbec is sitting so often. I figure the options are some combination of 1. Dalbec has an unknown injury 2. Cora believes the extreme split Dalbec has had this year, due to small sample size noise, is legit (despite not existing previously in his career) 3. Cora believes that 2017 is the best representation of Gonzalez's skill level 4. Cora believes Gonzalez needs to play frequently and that he provides a bigger upgrade over Dalbec at first than over Renfroe/Cordero in left 5. The number of games he has sat just appears inflated due to the two he sat early in the season to fix his swing Anyone have any thoughts?

This team has been lousy at home since early 2019. That needs to change if they want to contend.

So... the Mariners got this kid and Kelenic for Cano and Diaz? I think maybe people should talk about the Mariner model!
