I see a Jacoby Ellsbury for Rick Porcello trade on the horizon. Admittedly it's just a hunch. Am I crazy?

It seems like Ells has more value than Porcello if the rumors of a Street or Gregerson price are anywhere near accurate. Right now we are trying to win and Ells isn't going anywhere. If we are out and he is playing at an All Star level he could be dealt and his market would be pretty big in my opinion.

Even if Ellsbury's trade value is so low that he's not worth any more than Porcello right now, there's no way the Red Sox make that trade. Why in the world would you trade your starting CF (one with the potential Ellsbury has, no less) for a 5th starter, especially when your rotation is already full?

Dmaineah, what are your reasons for seeing this as a possible deal? As someone who likes Porcello, this trade makes little sense for either team.
Mainesox, the Red Sox rotation is full in the same way it was in 2006. While it's hard to justify trading a player with Ellsbury's talent and not getting a big piece in return, the Sox could really use a reliable 180ish innings. Like I said in another thread, Porcello had a 3.91 FIP last year, and was only 23. He's better than the average #5 starter, and he's better and more durable than Felix Doubront right now.

Right, I didn't mean he wouldn't be an upgrade, just that he wouldn't be enough of an upgrade to justify trading Ellsbury to get him. If they only had four pitchers and they were desperate for a fifth, maybe they make that trade out of desperation (doubtful, but maybe), or if he was enough of an upgrade over Doubront/Lackey maybe they do it, but they aren't that desperate and he isn't that good.

I think Detroit could go all in to try to win it all this year. I could see Ellsbury playing LF & batting 1st or 2nd. I think it would be a great move for Detroit & not so great borderline terrible move for Boston. I am not calling for this trade to happen because I still think the Red Sox should keep Ellsbury & that he should be part of the core that is built around.
