Bruins '21 OFFSEASON Thread

@nhlrumorsdaily (he's unverified but has a pretty good record when it comes to info) says that Bruins and Hall are disconnected on term.
Add - says the AAV is around 5.5M and that there is plenty of time to work on agreeing on the length.

BTW - with the Carlo extension, looks like Boston has 26,156,612 in Cap Room with the following needs
Re-sign Krejci (or find a replacement) Re-sign Hall (or find a replacement) Sign/Trade for a Top 4 LHD Sign a goalie - this'll be interesting given Rask's injury. As stated before, don't think you can go with Swayman/Vladar (as much as I like them). Need a vet (backup, at least).

Four years a that price is great, Five is fine.

I know technically we can drag it into next year since he's RFA next year, but seems much smarter to look hard at getting that sorted now?

2/8 for Krejci
4/22 for Hall
Ryan Suter 1/5
Jani Hakanpaa 3/6
Rask 2/9
Goodrow 3/10.5
Another 4th line acquisition, somebody that actually bangs for cheap
Another bottom pairing big defenseman for cheap.
If we have $26 mill to play with that’s what I’d do

I hope we're talking to Seattle about a trade, too. Couple of guys they could draft but that they might prefer to deal for picks and prospects.
Specifically, Joonas Donskoi (Colorado) and Sam Bennett (Florida) I would take as our 3rd line wings, gladly.

If we have $26 mill to play with that’s what I’d do Rask won’t be available until at some point in the second half. I’m not giving him a 2 year deal and if it’s true he will only play in Boston, I’m probably not evening signing him until later in the year if you need to once he’s healthy. I hear Tex on needing a veteran, but we are in roll the dice territory with the Bergeron timeline and I think I’m rolling the dice on a super cheap goalie corps to load up every where. It’s a gamble but a calculated one.

They need to move on from DeBrusk, definitely should be exposed or traded for cap space. That’s another 3.675m to play with. The free agent class after this year is loaded and teams this year have limited space so it’s a ripe scenario for the Bruins to get aggressive and get some good deals. They need to do it now - I’m. It suggesting they get stupid and over-pay, I just think there will be more deals to be had.
Krejci should be a 1 year deal, you can use his space and slot next year along with savings on Bergeron to try and sign one of the top young Centers that will be on next years market. I think Krejci would be open to a lower hit, one year deal to give one more run here before he heads back overseas.
Charlie needs an extension but it doesn’t need to be now. If he’s open to a nice team friendly one then jump on it. Say 5 or 6 years at 7.5 or under.
If Hall is at 5.5 and he wants 5 or 6 years then you have to go for it even if the length is a bit long. You don’t get that talent at that number - even if he doesn’t play like it always, you need to take the chance. Christ Coyle gets 5m…

Interesting, because that site had them starting the offseason with like 24 mil. I like this number better. Not 100% sure but when they first shifted over to this offseason's numbers, they just had it for everyone who was on the roster at season's end. Now I believe they moved everyone who is on a 2-Way or is Waivers Exempt to the non-roster section. So guys like Swayman and Vladar were in the calculation originally, then they moved them. So there is some flux as it's quite likely that one of Swayman or Vladar will actually be on the roster (whereas CF makes it seem like they need 2 goaltenders).

@bruinscapspace has them at 24.9M
The difference is they have Vladar/Swayman in the calculation but don't have Blidh/Kuhlman. Also, they have a 2.2 Bonus Overage (which I believe CapFriendly originally had as well but since changed to 964K via some "stretching" of the overage, I believe?)
So somewhere between 24.9 - 26.1 is how we should look at it.

My problem with signing Rask now is what if Swayman IS ready? I'd rather have a "tweener" type (better than a backup but not a true #1). If you need him during the season, sign him then. Not like you're going to lose him to another team (injury and insistence on only playing for Bs).
One idea I heard was trading with Dallas to bring Khudobin (who had a nice run in the playoffs) back. They need some room to pay Heiskanen and Dickinson (both RFAs) as well as improve the team in general and only currently have about 15M in room (per CapFriendly).

Christ Coyle gets 5m… I agree with most of this but the DeBrusk thing I think isn't that easy. I have no idea why he regressed so much this year but I am sure the B's do and what they know will dictate this decision. He had really good age 21, 22 seasons and then started to regress a bit at 23 and then was just not the same player at 24, why is the question and can he be rebooted in the same locker room, is it covid related. A third line that starts with the 2017-2019 DeBrusk and a healthy Coyle has the makings of a very productive 3rd line. And if as you say and I agree with this coming season is an all in roll of the dice then the DeBrusk decision is a big one. The team will need to weigh his potential of bouncing back vs what they can get for him so hopefully which ever way they go it ends up being the right decision. If the information is correct on Hall then absolutely yes give him 5 or 6, that is a steal. I was concerned other teams like Toronto were going to get involved and make sure the price wasn't too good for the B's but that doesn't seem to be the case if that is good intel. I would also treat the goaltending situation the same, wait for Rask and don't spend a lot in the mean time. It is a little risky but I think they can get by with the 2 young guys and a cheap veteran, they will need to add another goalie one way or another. With a little luck on staying healthy they should really be able to contend next year, the Hall trade is looking better every day.

I agree, it does seem to be effort related which seems to be a fixable offense. What has been going on in his mind, life or whatever that has him down and not being who he has always been. There has been a lot of talk about how isolated these guys have been with the pandemic and how that can lead to depression type emotions.

BTW - I'd also send Wagner down to Providence. Just need something else on that 4th line. That gives you another 1M in Cap Relief with only a couple 100K on the books for him (unless, of course, you can trade him).

Sure but it doesn't impact this year's cap so I wasn't including it in my "to do" list. Also, there is probably a need for another RW. Maybe they should give Studnicka a crack at the job as that will give them more Cap Flexibility during the season (and not committing to term). You can always revisit at the deadline if needed.

And now CF has updated their bonus overage number for Boston to 1,956,507 (still not the 2.02 that BruinsCapSpace has) leaving there Cap Room at 25,164,326.

It’s a gamble but a calculated one. 100%. Except it's not even a gamble, really. You bring in a cheap vet and you have half a year to see if Swayman can handle it (and there's no reason to think he can't) and, even if he can't, you have your vet plus Vladar. I suppose we could call it a risk that all three options would fail so badly that the season will be a washout before Rask could come back, but that's a stretch. BTW, the "give Swayman a chance" and "Wait on Tuukka" strategies are both the same- A cheap vet plus Swayman until Rask can come back. The only other real option would be to acquire a more expensive vet, which would basically proclude both possibilities. There is just no reason for a 2 year deal for Rask. We've got half a season to see what Swayman can do, and to evaluate how Tuukka is recovering. Then we can determine if we want him back as a back-up or a starter or not at all. Giving him a 2 year deal means you don't want to take a chance at getting better in the net AND you want to bank everything on an aging G coming back from injury AND you don't want money to upgrade the rest of the roster. No thanks.

Listen you can say you don’t want to go 2 years for Rask- that’s fine- but to say that I don’t want them to have money to upgrade elsewhere is a little ridiculous considering the post quoted literally has them upgrading at multiple spots….

For sure, I’m just saying whatever they do with Rask one way or the other isn’t really going to prevent them from upgrading other spots. They are in a shockingly good spot financially. I’m intrigued to see if they manipulate the cap with Rask and LTIR in a way similar to what Tampa did with Kucherov. Tbh I have no idea how any of that works though so I’ll leave it to Evan Gold
