Learned Memorial Day weekend that a friend's beach house in Ocean City is like 30 minutes from Delmarva. Scheming has begun... Won't be for this week though.

Some rare mid week afternoon baseball - especially for 2021. Chance to focus on the Groome this afternoon.

Good stuff, and, good luck with that scheming! Looking at trips to Delmarva (7/6 - 7/11, their last road series, here) and/or Fredericksburg (6/29 - 7/4 & 7/10 - 7/15). Delmarva is about 2 hrs East; Fredericksburg, bout an hour southwest, from sibling, in Springfield, VA... ...Greenville @ Aberdeen, 6 games series, Sept 14-19, also under consideration (about a 2 hr drive, north)

Just following the MILB gameday, but Groome really struggling to throw strikes - 40 strikes in 74 pitches. Has 4BB through 4IP (including 3BB of the 4 pitch variety).

Groome did strike out 7 and only gave up 3 hits, zero runs. Mixed bag.
After what we’ve seen the last several years (or what we haven’t seen). I’m just happy to see him out there pitching. I’m hopeful that if he can stay healthy that progression will come. I’ll take today’s start as a positive.

It seems like he has lapses where he can't find the strike zone. Agree. His control looks great at times and then he completely loses it in others (the consecutive walks were on 8 pitches and another walk was on 4 pitches). He wound up with 44 strikes on 82 pitches, but.. Strikes/pitches (I've clearly miscounted but it's something like this) 1st 4 hitters: 9/13 next 2 hitters: 0/8 <mound visit> next 7 hitters: 18/29 next hitter: 0/4 <mound visit> next 4 hitters: 13/24 He clearly lost it for 3 hitters to whom he threw 4 balls each, corrected after two mound visits.

Seems like something readily identifiable by the coaches and something he can correct with reminders. Hopefully over time this resolves itself and/or he can be more self-aware and self-correct. I'd assume that's a big part of pitcher development and an issue for most pitchers (on a relative/sliding scale basis - i.e. some obviously need that more than others). But I am no pitching coach.

Too many walks and too many pitches? Has he been taking pointers from some of the big league pitchers this year?
A serious question though, at least in this small sample, it seems that after a mound visit Groome throws strikes. Does anyone who watched want to take a guess on why? Is there something mechanical the coach was reminding him of? Is he just being told to stop trying to nibble around the edges during the visits? Or maybe he just needed a minute to collect himself?
I'm really curious about that. Or maybe its just a meaninglessly small sample size.

A good thing to keep in mind with Groome is the guy has barely pitched in three years. Give him time.

Given the endless comments about how he'd lost this pitch, and that pitch, could it be that he's rebuilding his stuff and he's less concerned about pinpoint location?

Random factoid: Tyler Esplin's 29 BBs are the most in High-A East. He walked once today in addition to 3 hits.

The education of Jay Groome, it is an interesting follow for us prospect junkies. Is he Ball or is he....

as novice as they come watching film of these guys, but one thing I seemed to notice was that on his follow through on his fastball he ended up very unbalanced, all over the place. On his offspead pitches he seems to follow through perfectly, ending up in great position to field a comebacker.
Anyone know what velocity he is working at? is he still 90-91-92?

I think the feedback on Groome is we’re in a hurry up and wait. You almost have to throw out the last few years. If he can stay healthy let’s give him a year and see how he progresses. He’s literally never had that, ever!!!! we have no ideal how a full season can develop him for the better, or maybe we do IDK. Honestly if he laid and egg for half the year and started dominating the league for a month and the scouting says his stuff ticked up I’d be back on the Groome train. If he doesn’t develop at all staying healthy for year I think his prospect status starts to fall faster. But if he stays healthy his value can shoot right back up.
There’s probably not one guy in our system who has the potential to both increase and decrease his value as much as Groome does right now.
I’m rooting for the guy.

He's always had decent or better K/BB ratios (actually i Lowell, but not low-A Greenville) - or at least good BB%. He's a guy that could just put it all together. Just needs to tap into that raw power in games.

Ockimey just hit a long home run (6) to center field. First at bat in a few days I think.

Groom’s Stuff looks pretty nasty. The fastball gets there quick. Probably good extension.
