Random factoid: Tyler Esplin's 29 BBs are the most in High-A East. He walked once today in addition to 3 hits. Really interested in Esplin. He's always had decent or better K/BB ratios (actually i Lowell, but not low-A Greenville) - or at least good BB%. He's a guy that could just put it all together. Just needs to tap into that raw power in games. I remember Alex Speier saying something a few years back about how the organization is way higher on him than the industry is, something about his blast or batted ball metrics I think. Probably explains why he’s batting third and playing center field every day for a pretty good Greenville team at 21-yo. Ever since I read that I’ve always been super intrigued and he just continues to be solid every year.

Too many walks and too many pitches? Has he been taking pointers from some of the big league pitchers this year? A serious question though, at least in this small sample, it seems that after a mound visit Groome throws strikes. Does anyone who watched want to take a guess on why? Is there something mechanical the coach was reminding him of? Is he just being told to stop trying to nibble around the edges during the visits? Or maybe he just needed a minute to collect himself? I'm really curious about that. Or maybe its just a meaninglessly small sample size. I didn't watch this game and so really have no idea what they said to Groome, but I can't resist this question anyway. Part of the answer, I think, is obvious. They are working on specific aspects of his delivery: they know what he does when he's successful and what causes him to get out of sync. It could be very technical but is more likely to be something more straightforward. They tell him what he's doing wrong, and he can adjust because they've been working on it. In sports (basketball, golf, tennis) which I know much better than baseball, here are some of the straightforward fixes: 1) tempo: usually the player needs to slow down, e.g. at the end of a golf backswing or, I imagine, the end of the wind-up; 2) muscular tension kills athletic movements, so, e.g., stop squeezing the ball (or your racquet); 3) check the grip on the ball; 4) check alignment and set-up, e.g. position on the rubber and the placement of the feet, plus the start of the wind-up; 5) watch for a hitch in the pitch or swing, e.g. when a pitcher (or hitter) throws himself out-of-sync when he reaches back for something extra. 6) Keep the head still (or moving in a consistent way) in an athletic motion. I'm guessing that for most pitchers that means locking in on something (like the catcher's mitt) during the delivery (or at least at the end of it). Even for great players, I imagine, most fixes are pretty straightforward, especially if the player trusts the coach. Without confidence, it's hard to be successful.

Just following the MILB gameday, but Groome really struggling to throw strikes - 40 strikes in 74 pitches. Has 4BB through 4IP (including 3BB of the 4 pitch variety). Is it sad to say that I hope groome establishes himself for 2-3 months which might fetch us a nice player at trade deadline. ( combined with another player or two).

Looks like he needs to lose some weight! Mickey Lolich says maybe not Mickey's famous line when upbraided about his weight was "I don't pitch with my stomach!" Hard to argue... Bartolo and El Guapo say "Hi!"

It at all. I’m not sure how you make that assumption. I strongly disliked one college pitcher and if we can draft a shortstop would prefer that. Second I don’t know if this pitcher will make it to majors to contribute. So if my belief is he might not be able to make it.... then why not trade him for someone at trade deadline who will.

Are there any reports on Groome’s velocity etc. from this game? I am still 100% on the Groome train (well… 98%?) and hoping for the best. It seems like there is still a world of upside.

I liked the (albeit small) show of emotion from Groome as he got out of that last inning. One of the things (was it Abbott?) said about him at the alt site was they wanted to see him compete, even in bullpen sessions. He's going to have to battle to reach his potential.
Positive steps lately.

The return for groome is not worth the risk of having him hit his ceiling with another franchise. It’s not like the Sox are going to get ketel marte for him straight up. Why just give him away for a decent spare part ?
