Ok… let’s go, boys! These are the dog days of summer, so there were bound to be some bumpy rides. Today, we start anew. Excelsior!

Ugh. I just saw USA got silver in baseball. Really wanted to see Casas get a taste of Olympic gold before bringing home a few World Series rings.

Decider day for the immediate future for a starter role. May the better pitcher win.

Jeez, that lineup that got posted? Wow. Are they supposed to score runs with it? Cora doesn't have too many appealing options.

Why is Dalbec getting worse, is my question. Through late June he was following his familiar hot-and-cold pattern, and the problem was that his cold streaks were so frigid that it made for a bad overall line. He had actually been improving overall right through the solstice.
But now the problem is that he has simply been bad for a very long time. Since June 22 he's hit .204/.235/.301. Even by cherry-picking end dates, the best you can do is .346/.346/.500 from 6/28-7/09, a 128 wRC+, which is not great for being a cherry-picked sample, and in any event that stretch ended a month ago. He has one home run since the beginning of July.
I realize "Dalbec is having a bad season" is not a newsflash, but it's not just that; he's actually taken a step backwards in the last month and a half and I wonder why.

Personally I think the Sox are doing him a disservice to keep trotting him out there. He's clearly reached overwhelmed status, and he's being forced to try and figure it out at the big league level in front of all the lights and cameras. He should have been sent down in June to try and get his bearings, but the Sox seem determined to sink or swim him. I sorta feel bad for the kid (in between moments when I'm cursing his existence when he watches a ball down the middle for a strike and then swings at a ball he couldn't hit with a fucking oar.) He seems like a likeable kinda guy and I want to root for him, but he's well beyond any moment now it's going to click for him status.

I was assuming the book was already out on him but maybe the June version of Dalbec was actually a guy who had already made adjustments to the extent that he was able and the counter-adjustments have just sunk him entirely.

At one point last night the Sox were winning and NY, TB were losing and I was going to come on here and say something positive. Well that didn't quite workout did it. I wouldn't be surprised if this team made a run and won the division and I wouldn't be surprised if they continued to struggle and didn't even get a WC spot. They have out played expectations thru about 98 games so they have made it more fun than we expected and they still could turn this around so keep some faith the cavalry is coming. Might not be a very big cavalry but hey they are coming just the same. They got the best player in the draft who is undoubtedly the best draft pick in a long long time. Nick Yorks and Jordan are off to blazing starts making last years draft look great. Some 19 yr old kid named Wilkelmen down in the FCL has impressed scouts so much they have compared him to a top 20 draft pick. Casas has been ripping the leather off the ball in the Olympics. They stole a great pitcher or 2 from the MFY's and the sky has yet to fall. Those will be my thoughts on the day, have a good one. I really like Mayer a lot. I think hes going to be great. But if you're referring to him as the overall best pick in a long time the Sox would definitely take Spencer Torkelson over him. But hes probably the best Sox pick in a long long time. I thought it would be obvious I was talking about Sox draft picks, does that really need clarification. I mean really is he the best draft pick overall in decades, I think not. Don't be a ......

My question about Dalbac is why doesnt he use rf anymore? He hit several oppo hrs last season and in spring. Now he appears to try and pull everything. Not a change in approach that will help cut down striking out

Xander's pregame comments a bit self flagellation and a bit mystifying. Said "I guess we need to try harder"!?! Lots of Sox hitters just seem lost.

O'Brien just said "Bobby Dalbec would hit next if given the opportunity" and that is what we call a legendary display of confidence.

Not a change in approach that will help cut down striking out This is all across baseball.... Fielders will shift to one side and the hitter tries to hit it over the shift rather than to the side of the field that has been completely vacated. Apparently that approach is supported by advanced analytics.

Ray with 41 pitches through 3, so he'll be out by the 7th.

Ray with 41 pitches through 3, so he'll be out by the 7th. Pivetta will need to pitch a 7 inning shut out to have a chance to win and even that might be a scoreless tie.
