Whitlock has not thrown a strike. Luckily Trevino had about as bad an AB as I’ve seen.

You're shitting me, Barnes. well, he did crap himself. Left a big patty right there on the mound.

He turned back into a pumpkin after he got his extension. seems like those interviews when he was asked "what happens if the Red Sox pick Kimbrel at the deadline - would you be OK with that" broke Barnes. He's not been the same since. Eh, Barnes has historically always been better first half and dropped down as he gets tired. I think it's less about the rumor mill and more the dude just can't pitch as much as they use him, and if they do, he becomes pedestrian. He's not a closer, he's not a guy you can use 80 innings without depreciated returns. He has to be managed appropriately. I appreciate his willingness to take the ball, but I put it on the Sox for not recognizing his limitations and managing to them.

I was a big Barnes guy the first couple of years. How many relievers with his track record spend 6 years on a club anymore.
Need a guy who can consistently get outs closing games. That has not been his career.

So they end up striking out the side...everything else was a hit (by pitch)...

A few needed changes - Ottavino needs to leave the bridge - that role has to be Whitlock's. As to who the closer should be? No idea at this point - we don't have one. Honestly, I've thought for a while it should be Houck. I can deal with Richards' suckitude every fifth game as long as I have a bullpen. And Houck's shorter outings aren't helping the pen either.

They gotta score now - this was NOT a game that anyone should celebrate going into bonus baseball. Self inflicted wounds all over the place

Thought: maybe Whitlock closes? Cannot be Barnes anymore. And Cora said Whitlock is ready to work back to back games.

Is it fair to say the Sox will be in the closer market this winter? I like Barnes, but he really is better in the 8th inning slot. More than fair. I'm censuring myself because I'm beyond pissed at this performance, both on him, and Shaw, and Bogey, and Arroyo. You have to make the easy plays and take the outs you can get. It's maddening to watch/listen to this team. A lot of the defensive miscues recently have been a result of trying to do too much—rushing a throw or trying to make an impossible play as opposed to just eating the ball. On offense, they’re swinging too often and too early. This entire team looks anxious and tight.

Whitlock was huge there.
They need to score here. I really want no part of the extra inning thing.
Three factors that lead the Sox to blowing this game:
1) Terrible situational hitting in the 7th when they could have put the game away. 2) Shoddy defense. Dalbec missed a catch at 1b he should have had and Arroyo not securing the 2nd out hurt as well 3) More bad pitching from Barnes.
Fortunately Texas missed their chance and had terrible baserunning earlier in the game. Good teams are less likely to make the mistakes Texas did.

Thought: maybe Whitlock closes? It's a lot to put on the kid - maybe if they truly continue to play bad, it would be a good experiment for the rest of the season.

Thought: maybe Whitlock closes? No, he can't pitch back-to-back days.

Why have Shaw? If you are going to have a bad 1b, it may as well be Dalbec, who has good streaks and *might* be part of the future. Shaw is a temporary fix who fixes nothing.

A couple weeks ago I posted there's precedent (Papelbon) to plan to go back to starting but due to need, just be the closer. At this point, gotta wonder if Whitlock is the closer next year, though Id like to see him start.

Only thing I can think of is defense but even then…he didn’t make that play last inning (in fairness it was tough but if you aren’t going to hit…)

Is he pitching hurt? He's looked pretty mediocre since signing his extension.
