Where would this team be without Ottavino and Whitlock this season? Bloom deserves some credit. Those guys have saved the bullpen all year. Cashman deserves his share of the credit, as well...

Looks like Whitlock and ott are the only RP he trust anymore. That does bot speak too high of barnes right now. Barnes? BARNES? Did you say Barnes and high leverage in the same breathe? Feels like Cora is over managing. He has two guys throwing great and he brings in Perez whose Red Sox career is just about over.

Strange move by Cora but he's in a tough spot with this BP. He doesn't get consistent length out of his starters and he has three guys - Barnes, Perez and Robles - who are unpitchable in anything but a blowout game right now. He tried to steal an inning with Perez tonight and ended up having to use Ottavino anyways.

He needs to fight for a playoff spot and figure out how to steal innings when possible. it wasn’t a horrible idea with a few lefties coming up.

I don't think you can knock Cora for pulling Whitlock. He obviously knows he's the best option there but didn't want to work him too hard. He said Whitlock is out the next two games.

Assume he brought in Perez because of the two lefties, but that's obsolete thinking nowadays, isn't it? It’s almost “Mr. Burns takes out Darryl Strawberry for Homer Simpson for the platoon advantage”-level bad thinking.

.385/.529/.641 for an OPS of 1.170 now for Schwarber
Very minor impact from our deadline acquisitions!

You'd have to have 9 elite arms to keep a bullpen fresh the way Cora manages a game. Leaving your starters in longer is tiring them out over a long season. Making them more injury prone. How is that stealing? Throwing a fresh guy out there who’s going to be released soon to get a few outs is stealing.

It has been a long time since I pitched, but from what I recall going 2 innings in 1 outing vs. 1 inning each over 2 outings over time are not the same when it comes to wear and tear.

Warming up and number of pitches thrown are also a factor. One of the great things about Koji is it wasn't unusual for him to get through an inning throwing fewer than ten pitches.

No, his blame in that regard comes from leaving him in for an extra inning Thursday in a 10-2 game so he couldn't pitch that inning tonight.

It’s almost “Mr. Burns takes out Darryl Strawberry for Homer Simpson for the platoon advantage”-level bad thinking. It's classic Cora. He gives his players chances to prove themselves in real situations and I'm guessing that the players -- all the players -- love it because they know that they'll also be given their chance someday. And when they pass the test, the whole team is elated for them.
Does it cost you some games? Probably but as AC is wont to say, it's 162 and he needs to have everyone invested. In the rare instances that he runs away from someone, like Barnes right now, it's most likely at the request of the player. Like, "Skip, I need another couple days to figure this out."
I was nervous about Perez coming in but not at all surprised.

Whelp - we are now 10-6 in our last 16 games. We were 3-11 in our previous 14. Streaky team, and hopefully we can keep on the positive streak for awhile.

Very winnable game tomorrow for the sweep, 11-6 would be a solid 17 game stretch here

He's had a tremendous year - even if team doesn't make the playoffs Bloom's done a great job. Nine AL teams were projected to be better than the Red Sox. The Schwarber pickup only further highlights the strong job he's done.

When was the last time the Sox won 3 straight, excluding games played against a team in the process of losing 19 straight?
July 19 to 23 (2 each vs. the Jays and Yankees). They went 12-18 in between.
Winning 2 of of 3 against the Indians in their park is much more impressive than doing the same against the Rangers or Twins at home. A sweep would clinch the case for a real turn-around.
Speaking of which, all of JDM's hard-hit balls the last 4 games, ranked by xBA, with EV:
.930 HR today (106.2)
.920 6th inning single today (98.0)
.610 1st inning single today (106.4) .320 8th inning lineout today (97.6)
.313 Groundout Twins game 1 (100.3) .300 GDP Twins game 3 (101.7)
.070 fly ball out (322'), Twins game 2 (97.0)
Give Cora and the coaches credit for fixing him with one day off.
In an unrelated note, the gap between Ellis Burks and Lenny DiNardo as color men is about as large as that between them as ballplayers. Alas, the direction is opposite.
(I don't know what Burks used as walk-up music, but DiNardo used the Pixies' "Where is My Mind" when he came in from the pen, arguably the best choice in MLB history. I met him at a Pixies / Mission of Burma show in Lowell ... very nice guy.)

Yeah, the statistical demon seems to have reopened the door marked luck over the last two games. Belichick would probably call it "situational hitting". They'll need more of that in their push for the playoffs.

Josh Taylor is the best example of this. We all wanted him DFA’d and groaned every time he was brought in for high leverage appearance in April. He turned it around after a tough start and I don’t want to see what the standings would look like if we didn’t have him in the bullpen. Seems like Cora might be going for the same thing with Richards.... greedy to try to pull this off twice? So far so good....

I wonder if there's extra value in knowing the player, that he likes Boston/performs under the pressure etc....where some FAs come to Boston and disappoint...Im not sure it actually matters in real life, but in my mind Im way more excited about potentially signing him now than I would have been otherwise. Delete this when he OPS .650 next year...
