theathletic.com/2963238/2021/11/18/the-packers-saints-seahawks-steelers-and-more-get-ready-for-epic-qb-carousel-in-2022/Two things have me thinking quarterbacks today. First, poll by Phil Perry on whether you'd be happy with a Matt Ryan type outcome for Mac, the second Jeff Howe on the upcoming quarterback carousel (round 2) ($). On the first, Matt Ryan would have to be a great outcome for Mac. The Brady comp is obvious and obviously unfair. Given his performance at Alabama and how he's performed down the stretch and on 3rd and long plays I think there's plenty of hope for him to be Big Game Mac (unlike Ryan's rep). I hope Mac can work as hard as Brady at mechanics and footwork and gain a few incremental improvements on things like downfield passes and pocket movement (without ever being Lamar) and isn't fully realized at Age 23 as so many pundits claim. I'm guessing the team can scheme some more downfield success too, but I've always been a fan of high percentage throws in the 11-20 yard range more than the home runs, and he's showing early success in that area. Second, I can't believe how many teams settled last year at QB and are now regretting it (the same as the year before when the GOAT was a free agent and 30 teams basically said "naw we're fine"). The Saints settled for Jameis Winston on a high-ceiling playoff team (not knowing how the injuries would break); how on earth would you win with Jameis in the playoffs? The Panthers, WFT and Broncos half-in changes have never worked and will never work. Maybe the Broncos will get into the playoffs and win a game and I guess maybe that's enough. I don't think Matt Ryan or Kirk Cousins are the problems in Atlanta/Minny and there were cap implications for those guys (same as the Steelers, though Big Ben actually is the problem there). www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2021/11/18/mac-jones-patriots-nfl-draft-franchise-qb/Adam Kilgore ($) explores (but doesn't answer) the Nature vs. Nurture argument for Mac

If ppl are bummed that Mac becomes Matt Ryan they need to be sterilized. Guy has an MVP lol
Now if you want to hold out hope for more than Matt Ryan then by all means- I think there’s a chance he could be better. But if he ends up with a Matt Ryan type career he’ll be the teams 2nd best QB in its history. Don’t see how we could be disappointed with that.

I just hope they don't play down to their competition tonight. They should win handily, but the Pats have a history of just mailing it in to inferior teams. That could bite them. I don't think they'll open the playbook for Atlanta. They'll do that against Tennessee. If they can take on the Titans, then the Buffalo games should be epic. This probably the most interesting season since 2001. The Patriots have a history of just mailing it in to inferior teams and playing down to their competition?? Come on man what team have you been watching? I mean really, the Pats have broken every record there is when it comes to winning over the last 20 years right. Beating the teams you are supposed to beat is a hallmark of BBs Pats team. They have absolutely dominated the teams they were supposed to beat over that time, just ask Buffalo and Miami fans. Maybe if you are talking about this year but that was while they were still putting the team together early in the season and it was really just the Miami game. A game they would have won without a terrible fumble in the last minute of the game. Seems to me like this game tonight is the type of game the Pats have been winning for 20 years now.

I think this guy Kyle Dugger will be going to a Pro Bowl or two at some point. Great 2nd rd pick out of D2 leads the team in tackles and is having a great game. Pats are strong at safety with those 3!

Nick Folk is not to be trifled with. He's underappreciated right now, probably because the Pats have been spoiled with great kicking for so long. Folk competes for his job each camp, but I feel a lot better about him than the replacement level kicker he's treated like.

Lol @ Arthur Smith bringing in Chosen Rosen and Feleipe Franks. Hey coach, Matt Ryan is still a pretty good quarterback. Your o-line just sucks.

Some quick thoughts:
Pats defense is filled with stars. Other than a couple times a game when Jalen Mills gets a PI or Hightower is chasing around receiving backs, the defense doesn’t have any weaknesses.
Mac’s accuracy is Drew Brees level, all time stuff. I’ve been saying it since before the draft, give me the elite processor and elite accuracy all day over the rpms. Mac’s software is still catching up to his hardware. He missed several blitzes, and is still fighting the play clock. The play clock stuff tells me he knows the right thing to do, it’s just taking him longer to get there. And if you think that makes him dumb, you gotta understand that Justin Fields isn’t having play clock issues, because he doesn’t know what the hell is going on prior to the snap. Same with Lawrence, Wilson etc.
Rhamondre Stevenson has the best contact balance of any back in the league, Derrick Henry included. He never goes down first hit. He is reminiscent of a prime Le’veon Bell. Special runner. Gotta keep him and Harris healthy for the playoffs.

Workman-like, fine performance in a potential trap game. We are +123, second only to the Bills +145, next closest is Arizona +98.
We are well ahead of where I thought we would be - the opposite of the Celtics (worse than I expected).

Pats are strong at safety with those 3! He may not be in New England for a second contract. He’s quickly becoming one of the best strong safeties in the league. Btw, I can’t recall a team that had three pro bowl caliber safeties on its defense

The defense is something else
Barmore is getting doubled consistently as a rookie
KVN may have had his best game as a Patriot
Dugger is an absolute stud
McCourty was vintage McCourty
All Thursday night wins are great wins. They’re especially great when you pitch a shutout

That Falcons team without Ridley and Hurst doesn't have much talent on offense. I still have the Titans and Bills as prove it games. Where has that Van Noy been? When you get someone opposite Judon adding pressure it's all over, they come at you from everywhere. Yet that was also a crap OL. They should trade Ryan and rebuild. That was hard to watch after the Matt Ryan to Mac Jones comp question.
At this point Bill has to be thinking about the all-time win record right? Three more good years and 1,000 more articles on Brady versus Bill.

About the best you can expect on a short week with a rookie QB against a bad team. JC and Judon are true blue chippers Duggar and Baremore are on their way. Can't believe how much of a steal Judon is at $14m a year. He's just as disruptive in the pass rush as Chandler Jones but can move around, bust the run and credibly drop back in coverage.

I was going to mention how Van Noy has been dealing with a groin strain and how big it would be to have someone opposite Judon being a threat. This extra time off will only help him.
The Pats have a break now after the thursday night game and soon will get their bye week. Given their overall good health so far I can see this as being a major plus as other teams won't have this luxury. Just one more favorable factor headed into the home stretch of the season. They have some serious tests coming but my confidence in them is growing every week. The first big test will come after this short break but the Pats are usually better with extra time to prepare so I am bullish on beating the Titans.

I had thought the Patriots had actually been pretty healthy.
