I'm still very upset that Shaun Wade was on the Covid list last game. He's the one guy I wanted to see more of, guy that has legit starter traits.

Agreed on this - figuring out why the defense imploded has to be the number 1 task for the coaching staff this next month. Looking at the past 4 games suggests it needs to be blown up, but maybe there were other reasons that explain the sudden change. The Bills are a microcosm of the season - game 1 we got the "best scoring defense in the league" and they shut down the juggernaut (with some help from the wind). Games 2 and 3 bring me back to the defenses of the mid-Brady era that couldn't stop anyone. I sure hope Judon was injured, he was so bad towards the end. I called him out earlier for not containing Tua, but he also looked like a DB on that first drive the other night where Allen juked him out. It was a pathetic attempt by a linebacker to make a tackle. I've been hard on Hightower all season, he's clearly lost a step. He'll go down as one of the Patriot greats, but I think we need to start finding the next middle linebacker to build around. Overall though, I enjoyed this season. That Bills game in Buffalo will be one I remember for years.

The first year of a big free agent spending spree needs to look good because usually the big dead money cap hits are in later years. This last year was very good but not great. Internal development of their young guys are huge. Need guys like Duggar, Barmore, Onwenu, Stevenson to keep taking that next step forward and a few guys from the Uche, Winovich, Joejuan Williams, J.J. Taylor, etc. tier to pop. Most importantly, Mac Jones needs to keep improving. He was excellent for a rookie, but overall, he was just averagish, maybe a tick below. There’s a big difference between a Matt Cassel and a Kirk Cousins and a Matt Ryan. One of the big knocks on Mac over Lance/Fields/Wilson was that he was much closer to his ceiling already. I don't believe that but he definitely needs to keep growing (footwork, consistent mechanics, downfield touch) or else. Still feel better about him than Tua, Hurts, Baker, et al. and feel like we are closer to a SB contender with him than the Ravens with Lamar Jackson.

Going crazy signing players to big multi-year contracts last year looks like a big mistake. Never should have done it, I guess. I don't know that is completely true. Henry & Bourne look like good signings. Judon & Godchaux looked like pretty good signings until they faded late, so the jury is still out of them. Smith & Agholor though, yuck! Its really Jonnu Smith thats the problem. Agholor’s contact could be salary dumped to a bad team if we gave up a pick. Jonnu’s is a true albatross like the Pats haven’t had in a long time. Everyone else’s contracts are either fine or good.

www.pff.com/news/draft-2022-nfl-scouting-combine-winners-losers-offenseInteresting article from PFF about what combine metrics contribute to draft position and 3 year WAR and how this year's offensive prospects fared. Will be interested for the same on Defense. They got grumpy about how few prospects did agility drills, as did people who do Adjusted SPARQ and Speed Score.
