DSL: Is it a pennant race or playoff race? They're having playoffs? After 10/02?

Nice to see Winckowski get a look at the next level.
A wide-angle look at his season shows that in 22 AA starts he's had the following results:
6 starts with 0-1 ER allowed 5 starts with 4+ ER 8 starts with 6+ IP 5 starts with < 4 IP 8 starts with 5+ K 13 starts with 0-1 BB 3 starts with 4 BB
Solid results. More good than bad. No injuries. Took the ball every time his turn came around.

Personally I’ve stopped looking to MiLB pitchers ERA for a few years now, all I care about is strikeouts and walks meaning Do they have good stuff? And can they control/command it?

I think I'm mostly with this. If you cant miss bats in AA you won't make it in the majors. And Winck is more borderline...I don't think they'll expose Winckowski, but I think protecting him will cost them someone I like more.

Also Portland may have had the most pathetic defensive team in minor league baseball history this year. ERA is more than meaningless for those guys.

Looking good tonight. 13 batters, 12 outs (HBP). Those are good K/BB numbers for those focused on that. We'll see how it goes going forward. If they protect him, it won't cost them someone they like more.

What Castellanos getting a look in CF doesn’t do it for you? That defense matters for a guy who gets a lot of grounders like Winck does

6 innings- 3 hits- 2 runs- 0 BB- 6 K for Winck’s AAA debut
Must Protect. I think that was just emphatically slammed home.

Hmm ...... Worcester shut out, with Casas walked 3 times. Even a short time after promotion, folks are treating him with respect???

Personally I’ve stopped looking to MiLB pitchers ERA for a few years now, all I care about is strikeouts and walks meaning Do they have good stuff? And can they control/command it? I care about pitchers working quickly, changing speeds, keeping the batter off-balance, commanding the strike zone, throwing strikes. I also care about weak contact, keeping the ball in the yard, how a guy works with men on base, and being able to get a ground ball when he needs one.
I think K/BB is useful to look at but I also think that there's a lot more to it than that, some of which is actually reflected in descriptive (rather than predictive) stats like ERA. [N.B. I don't really care about Winckowski's 4.25 ERA as much as I care about how often he has good starts vs. bad starts, with caveats for things like working on a pitch or being governed by pitch counts that are not always obvious.]
A guy who had six starts out of 22 where he gave up zero or one earned run and 11 more in which he gave up 2 or 3 earned runs without eye-popping K/BB numbers probably did some of the things that I listed above, which makes me want to pay attention to him at the next level and perhaps even watch a start or two if I get the chance.
IMO, the problem with the big K guys, even if they don't walk too many, is that they become reliant on the K and if they can't miss bats in the Show, their gaudy numbers in the minors mean nothing. Give me a pitcher over a thrower every time.

No wonder Bobby D is taking grounders at 2B...
