Looks like Plawecki has become the go to catcher for Nate. He has almost no ability to throw out base stealers, but that is less of a potential problem with the MFYs. Nate usually does not issue many free passes. Gardner is the only semi threat to run in that lineup. Wade off the bench is the other threat to run but by then Plawecki is probably out of the game. Velazquez is a threat to run, too. Not sure how much the Yankees will try to run anyway, but he has plus speed.

Cole against Boston this year- 2-2 4.91 ERA, and allowed five HRs in four starts.
Eovaldi against NY this year-2-2 3.71 ERA, allowed 5HR in 6 starts

Hopefully they keep him off base and get no surprises out of him.

The Yankees run as much as the Sox did this year, which was almost nil (admittedly a shock to me given what Cora said in ST). I have a feeling this is going to be a blowout for one team or the other.

Cannot walk Brett Gardner tonight. The Red Sox have been doing it all year. If you need to put him on base, at least bean him.

Agreed. SB’s were only a topic because Plawecki was starting. I don’t expect the Yankees to risk any outs on the bases.

Captain Obvious says that Eovaldi had to set the tone and plow through Rizzi, Judge, and Stanton in the 1st inning.

Last Saturday we had a 2-1 lead with two outs in the top of the eighth with no one on and they walked Brett Gardner.
That absolutely cannot happen.

Meh. What's more important here, random numbers or a warm body ?

In my experience, the combination of fatigue and adrenaline (which would appear to describe Cole tonight) leads to mistakes. Everyone in this lineup is capable of doing the right thing with them. Make him throw pitches until he throws one he regrets. If the Sox do that, they should be fine.

Excitement and anxiety starting to bubble over. Just picked up dinner and got my first drink ready. Let's hope it's a good night.

JFC, can ESPN hire one analyst that doesn't work PR for the Yankees on the side? This is more ball-washing than Pebble Beach sees in a year.

I was going to remind folks that ESPN2 will have an alternate, sabermetric-oriented announcing team. I've always forgotten about ity, or not even known, in the past.

I know the current wildcard system has it's detractors, but I happen to love this. The postseason STARTS with a de facto game seven. Pretty damn exciting.
Also - no sympathy whatsoever for the Dodgers... With that roster they should have won 110 games and the NL West.

Eh, I respectfully disagree on that. They over achieved and then under achieved to balance out what was the expectation. I personally had them at about 93 wins before the season started. They held on to dear life for that WC 1 and were fortunate to have had Tampa Bay taking care of business. Red Sox were fortunate enough to escape 2 of the 3 games they swept against a Nationals team with nothing to play for. They limped in for months and showed no real hope for possible advancement. The team isn't overly young either, but they do have some young guys (Houck, Whitlock, maybe Dalbec) that showed they could be counted on in the future. Success based on March expectations? Sure. I just think they did enough in season to have expected more from them. I'm not even saying win the AL East, but they should have been able to push Tampa down the stretch. Are you serious or is this a joke ?. The expectation was 92 wins ? That's just flat out wrong. I said I had them at around that many wins, not that it was a national consensus. I thought people were sleeping on this team. I quickly abandoned that on the first sweep, but that was my pre-season prediction. July and August were major disappointments. September was better, except they showed nothing against NY or any playoff contender. Now the Yankees are favored, I have the Yankees losing tonight (really hope I'm wrong), the Yankees openly picked the Red Sox in a 4-way tie scenario because they believe you're the worst team out of them all and now Fenway seems to have been taken over by Yankees fans. It'll be fun to see them win. It just feels like their exit is set in stone. But making NY take an early bow out is all I want at this point. Just give me that after falling apart like they did.
