I still think we win tomorrow and take home field advantage.

I love Xander, great person, but he’s going to end up hurting this team like Jeter hurt the Yankees.

Get out of here with this Bogaerts hate. Bogaerts didn’t have a bad game at all, he’s not to blame for this game at all. It’s bad relief pitching and Sawamura looking like a little leaguer.

I really don't understand the thinking in putting Sawamura in for that situation. He has been very iffy of late and with 1 run down he proved to be exactly that. That was one cheap run that they scored and it proved to be the winner. I trust in Cora to do the right thing but in this case I think he was just wrong. Sawamura has pitched 1.2 IP in 3 weeks! Hard to even say how he’s been “of late”. So many questionable moves tonight. Did Danny Santana really hit for Renfroe? Is that right?

Only problem tonight really was Sawamura. Either let Houck go an extra inning or go to Darwinzon if you want to raise the white flag. Sawamura’s peripherals in the second half have been trash. Honestly at this point they should have called up a random Triple-A pitcher like Seabold or Bazardo or Barnes smh Everyone acts like putting Houck in is checkmate for the Sox. He’s not there yet. He’s not even close.

They lost because of 3 reasons:
1. Sale failed to soak up innings. He only got 8 outs. His command wasn't there. Each of is innings were an adventure. They can't win with him constantly putting immense pressure on the pen.
2. The failure of the Sox offense to expand their 3-1 lead, especially when they had runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out and failed to score. Verdugo was hit by a pitch. Cora failed to have it reviewed and Verdugo fanned. They removed their starter, and a supposed weakness of the Astros, their pen, should down the Sox for pretty much the rest of the game. Let's hope asantana PHing for Renfroe doesn't happen again.
3. The bullpen, having to cover too many innings thanks to Sale, failed in the final 3 innings, allowing 4 runs. I would have thought an inning from Pivetta might have made sense. Bringing Sawamura into a close game was an awful move by Cora. Hope he doesn't do the same thing with Darwinzon. He could have pitched either Pivetta or Whitlock over Sawamura and failed to do so. Houck failed today. Perhaps that 5 inning relief stint caused him to lose effectiveness as he has surrendered homers in his last 2 outings?
Basically the Sox played bad enough to negate Kiké's heroics.
They can't play like that and expect to beat Houston. When the Sox beat Houston in 2018 Correa and Altuve were ailing. Obviously not the case here.

I can buy Santana over Renfroe I guess, but why is he hitting for Renfroe instead of Arroyo?

Maybe the headline is that Sale is just not what he was, can be, or we need him to be - and probably will be again next year. Labored through to get only 8 outs. Not sure what he is at this point, with 3 ineffective starts in a row - an opener? bring him out of the pen? I might be crazy, but I was encouraged by his progress tonight. Struck out Altuve on a nice slider, decent command fastball glove-side, and a passable changeup. He fastball command was a big one and he was squeezed a bit. I want to see him with Plawecki next time, like please just try it given that Sale never shakes off (which kinda annoys me with the constant adjustments people make these days). The fastball command was much better than the last month, it is a big step forward and I could see him stepping up big at Fenway in a 4-5 inning stint (probably in a Houck start with Houck at a strict 60 pitch limit). Totally agree with everyone thinking about Pivetta as the best relief option The “glass is half full” Sale guys really crack me up. I can hardly even blame Sale, though. as it was obvious that he had no business starting tonight in the first place. Cora managed this one like he didn’t really need it(not sure why) and they are down 1-0 as a result. You reap what you sow.

I did post before the game that I was most concerned about his glove-side fastball command. It seems ridiculous for sure, but I can relate from when I pitched with a slider-heavy repertoire. I’ll eat my words if Sale sucks next game, but this was an ok outing against the best offense in baseball and looks like the foundation of an outing of let’s say 4-5 innings 1 run and 5K. We’ll get to see soon!

He’s not even close. Houck is definitely not checkmate, but trading off a second inning from him for an inning of Sawamura barf is surrender. Houck’s slider has been pretty flat, so that needs to get fixed otherwise he’s going to keep giving up high leverage 2-run bombs

We’ll get to see soon! Sale had no idea where his pitches were going tonight. But this wasn’t a new phenomenon, either. It should have been obvious to Cora and the pitching coach and everyone else for the last 2+ weeks. Now Cora had to burn through the whole bullpen(Pivetta probably unavailable tonight) in game 1 and use an afterthought like Sawamura in a key spot late in the game. All because Sale had no business being out there. I’m not sure what Cora was trying to prove with any of this.

Again, we have them right where want them. Take game 2 and come back to Boston with momentum and home field advantage. It's brilliant and it worked against the Rays, it'll work against the Asstrolls.

Red Sox need to grab a lead and hang onto it. They have now lost the lead in 3 straight games. It didn't cost them the first two as they recovered both times at home. But last night it cost them the game. Can't play that way against Houston.

We lost a 1 run game. No latitude on the multitude of platitudes of certitudes regarding the series.
Dissimilitude of attitudes won't help our angst, Dudes !!

1-9 RISP. That was the game for the Sox. Houston’s first few pitchers were not impressive, either.

Is it just me or does it always seem like the most brutal critics on this forum make an exception for Sale?

Sox need to switch up the signs again today. Astros cheat very well at home. Sawamura should be banished from this roster with a phantom injury. Ill take Barnes.

It's one game.... last night was a bump in the road.
The Sox bats will get back on track today and they will head back to Boston with home field advantage.
