Red Sox vs. Astros 2021 ALCS Gameday Thread
|
Post by jimed14 on Oct 15, 2021 16:10:29 GMT -5
Sox owed one big time for Jim Rice missing the '75 post-season. The Sox avoided Chris Carpenter in the 2004 World Series because of his injury, which was very helpful. I'll always feel if Lowell and Beckett were healthy, the Sox would have repeated in 2008. Sox had a 4 game cushion by the end of that 2004 WS, so I don't think Carpenter was the difference. In a close series, you could say that.

I might start a trashcan banging ritual tonight just to mess with the Astros' cosmic energy.
I still have not washed the Red Sox t-shirt that I have worn for every win so far. Starting to get unbearable. lol

Sox had a 4 game cushion by the end of that 2004 WS, so I don't think Carpenter was the difference. In a close series, you could say that. They won Game 1 by a score of 11-9. Perhaps Carpenter might have pitched better than Woody Williams and the Sox might not have won that one. And then Carpenter might have started a potential Game 5 and possibly might have won it and brought the Series to 3 games to 2. Doesn't mean the Sox would have lost and I didn't say he was the difference. I would say it was a break to avoid him and did make it easier to win that series. Carpenter was the only starter they had with swing and miss stuff and the Sox didn't miss anything with Williams, Morris, Suppan, and Marquis starting. They swung and missed about 37 times in that series in 4 games.

Sox lineup... Kiké Hernández, CF Kyle Schwarber, 1B Xander Bogaerts, SS Rafael Devers, 3B J.D. Martinez, DH Hunter Renfroe, RF Alex Verdugo, LF Christian Arroyo, 2B Christian Vázquez, C I understand not starting Bobby D, hasn’t been hitting. But if you rearrange positions, (Verdugo is too hot to bench) such as move Kiké to 2B (bench Arroyo), Renfroe to CF, Schwarber to RF, Bobby D at 1B… Is it worth it? Bobby D over Arroyo in your lineup? Is it worth it defensively/offensively? I think that Bobby just needs a start to find his groove.

I think this tells us that He won’t be starting any games in this series. Cora seems to have everyone where he wants them now.

Speaking as the biggest Dalbec booster on the forum there is simply no place to put him with Martinez and Schwarber both on fire. Kiké is the best or 2nd best CF in MLB and CF is the most important defensive position in today's MLB.

Oh wow, I don't understand that at all. How do you leave Dalbec out of the lineup vs. a lefty? I'd much rather see him there than Verdugo, or Arroyo, as suggested.
He went a *little* cold in the last two weeks of the season but it's like they lost faith in him completely, if he's not even getting a start against a lefty.

But I'm not upset about going with the lineup that's been working. It's a close call.

I've been thinking about the shenanigans that teams are pulling in the playoffs much more often lately that is forcing or highly encouraging teams to remove all their platoon players from games by the time the 4th inning rolls around. The only way to counter that is to just put your best lineup out there to start the game regardless of the starter who may not pitch past the 2nd inning and then pick your best platoon matchups late in the game when they can't change pitchers. That's just a theory I had. For example, Dalbec could bat for the first time with the bases loaded and the Astros bring in Ryan Stanek and Dalbec doesn't even get an at bat.

I’m fairly certain Dalbec is like 2 for his last 31. Against Framber he is 0-6 with 4 k’s. This is a playoff game, you absolutely do not tank your teams defense to sneak that into the lineup. He will get important AB’s in the series, he’ll probably even get one tonight
I don’t think you can bench either Verdugo or Schwarber at the moment. Plus Verdugo is starting to return to his career norm against lefties lately it would appear

So I have a question, we have a better record than ATL, but they won their division. So who has Home field advantage in the World Series? Just asking for a friend who is buying tickets. If it is Red Sox vs Braves in the WS then the Sox have home field. It goes to whoever has the best record of the two teams. This is correct. www.mlb.com/news/world-series-home-field-advantage

Hard to avoid concluding that the Red Sox aren't believers in Bobby Bombs.

Hard to avoid concluding that the Red Sox aren't believers in Bobby Bombs. 3 true outcomes guys are not the types managers believe in during the playoffs. Verdugo has hit well, makes contact, and gives us a better defensive OF. I wouldn’t have minded seeing Bobby get the nod, but I get it.

One caveat is that Dalbec has been terrible as a pinch hitter, which is maybe just a SSS thing, but on the other hand, the pinch hitter penalty is real, and maybe he gets penalized more than most.

It's definitely the lineup you use if you expect to get to the opposing pitcher early/ Maybe they know something we don't.
