Another closer option just came off the board - to the Diamondbacks no less! Mark Melancon signed a 2 year deal with 14 million guaranteed. Not sure exactly what that means. This reminds me that we had that guy for one season and it was the single worst year of his 13-year career, and we traded Jed Lowrie to get him. Flipped him for Brock Holt though! So not a total loss. But both transactions go to show: never trade for relievers.
For whatever it's worth, they flipped him (and the throw-ins from the Punto deal, Jerry Sands and Ivan De Jesus, I believe) for Joel Hanrahan, and Holt was a throw-in. I distinctly remember Hanrahan looking nasty as hell in a series at Fenway that summer. I believe he (and Andrew Bailey) went on to fall apart, opening the door for High Five City to become a thing. Which only further proves your point, I guess.

Has to be a lesson there, but damme if I’m not always up for trading for the next lights-out closer!

Texas seems like the 2022 version of the Padres, without Tatis. They'll be lucky to also finish 79-83. Maybe they got their next Shin-Soo Choo.

Yankees signed inciarte to a minor league deal. I've always like inciarte, I know his offense has cratered but that could end up being an underrated move for them. In the very least it's no risk/medium chance of reward deal. Wouldn't have hated him on a minor league deal for the Sox but he's probably got a better chance of making the ML roster in NY. Would have taken injuries for him to have a shot in Boston.

Not a huge Showalter fan, but I feel like he brings the sort of stability that organization needs. I don't think it'd necessarily be the right job for a rookie manager.

I agree with this, never liked buck but he's going to bring a sense of stability and professionalism to the organization as the manager. Something they certainly needed.

I always hated playing against Buck's Orioles teams. But Scrappy Overachiever/ spoiler isn't gonna cut it for the Mets. I wouldn't want him as a coach but probably biased. Does he still have the 100 page book from "The Diamondback Way" days?

One thing Buck has going for him is knowing what it is like to be between the NY media and a blowhard owner. That is a big plus for him.

The Associated Press (as reported by ESPN) released info on the 2021 payrolls as calculated for luxury tax purposes. The Red Sox payroll was below the $210M threshold as anticipated coming in at $207.6M, which is actually a tad lower than I thought it would be.

Is the Dodgers' pick getting pushed back then? I think it is, right?

Why would his wife announce his retirement on Twitter? I had to figure out if it was a joke or not because I wasn't sure if Julie was Corey or Kyle's wife.

Reminds me of those dark days before twitter, when no one had any way of communicating with the outside world. It's like before GPS when people wandered around perpetually lost - no idea where they were going, just walking into walls...

Julie is Kyle's wife so Corey and Bob are still active.
Not everyone is into Twitter.

The Athletic is being purchased by the New York Times, the absolute pits of a "news" organization.

The Athletic is being purchased by the New York Times, the absolute pits of a "news" organization. That’s a shame. It felt good to support an upstart company that wasn’t owned by one of the media behemoths, somehow this takes some of the pleasure away from that.
