With rumors of Juan Soto turning down $350 million I wonder if he gets traded in the next year to restock their farm. That would be hard to say no to but given his age he should get $400+ when the time comes.

With rumors of Juan Soto turning down $350 million I wonder if he gets traded in the next year to restock their farm. That would be hard to say no to but given his age he should get $400+ when the time comes. Whether a team like the Nats should give him that much is a fascinating question. They don't really have much on the farm, although last year's trade deadline got them a good amount of MLB-ready young talent like Gray and Ruiz. Still, I just don't look at that roster and see the next contending Nats team. Selfishly I'd love to guarantee 3-4 must-watch ABs at every Nats game I go to for the next 12 years but that might be a situation where dealing him makes sense. At any rate, the 350M number strikes me as a fair first offer, but he was never taking that.

Agree. It would be painful to trade the Ted Williams of this generation but it might be best to trade him for a boatload of prospects and use the money in other ways. That said could you see the dodgers in play trading a bunch of young guys? Yanks? Mets? Hypothetically how many guys would we have to add to say a Devers led package? Could the Marlins bring him down to South Florida for some young pitching? It would be tough to see who matches up bc whoever trades for him would want a decent shot at signing him. Mariners would probably have the capital but could they sign him?

By his age 23 season, he had 36.4 fWAR (and then went to war for 3 years). Soto has 17.7. To be fair, 586 games for Williams and only 464 for Soto, but still it's not even close. Trout is the only person that can be compared and he still was nowhere near as good of a hitter.

He reminds me of Hank Aaron, quietly smashing 35 HRs per year for 20 something years, batting .300 and drawing a lot of walks. Maybe my comparison is off, but being compared to Hank Aaron would be high flattery. But Ted Williams' numbers were so ridiculous, in such a different stratosphere, I'd say there's roided up Bonds and Babe Ruth, and probably Gehrig and Hornsby and that's about it. (I'd have to think about Cobb and Shoeless Joe). The only player I remember seeing that reminded me of Ted Williams' from an offensive standpoint was a young Frank Thomas, with his ability to hit .330, smack 40 homers, and walk well over 100 times per year, but he couldn't sustain it over the years although his "downturn" was still of HOF caliber.

Pretty nuts that even though he had 74 career WAR and an OPS above .950 over 2300 games still only played in five all star games. Voters kinda botched it with the Big Hurt. Glad he got what was coming with regards to his HoF inclusion. What a hitter.

Also how many of todays players would have sat out the season ending double header in 1941 to protect the 400 average? I would guess most who found themselves in that situation.

Could also be that Jeter who to get a larger ownership stake, and that is not happening.

I hadn't really thought about what % he owned (or really cared) but I guess that makes sense too.

Carlos Rodon signed with the Giants - 2 years $44 mil w/ opt out after first year, per Passan.

1. 2/$44 for Rodon sounds very reasonable. 2. Rodon, given his risk, is not a player I would have been willing to give an opt-out to. Good on him for getting one though.

IF he's healthy that's a steal. Big IF. Still don't understand why the White Sox didn't give him a QO.

Too bad about Rodon. He was the one free agent starter who could have helped. Now if they want to improve their rotation, they'd have to trade talent. Really wish the Sox hadn't let E-Rod get away so easily.

Andrelton Simmons to cubs 1 year 4 mil with incentives. Not a bad contract for them I wouldn't have hated him on sox for that but obviously wouldn't have as much opportunity for playing time on sox.

Still, Erods contract is excellent in this market.
