Hopefully that means he’ll be better rested for the end of the season…

How does one get a stress fractured rib?

Wow Sale down? I'm glad it's not his elbow or shoulder though still.
As someone who tries to see the potential in any bad situation perhaps this puts him in a better position to be fresh come September/October and it gives the Sox another opportunity to see who may or may not shine in the Whitlock/Houck/Hill/Wacha group.

There is absolutely NO depth in that rotation, either. It’s now “Eovaldi and pray for rain”.

I don’t think there’s much top end talent, but we have Kutter and Seabold for depth and Groome potentially as well. Doesn’t mean our rotation isn’t crap (it is), but our replacement starters should be better than Brad Peacock this year.

Well....it's a good thing they didn't need E-Rod...
At this point, Michael Pineda would be the best thing you can hope for from the market assuming the Sox don't make a big move.
If I was a conspiracy theorist I'd say they could sign Freeman and trade Dalbec and others to Oakland for Manaea and perhaps others depending how big they go with what they'd be willing to give up (Oakland has Murphy,, Laureano, and Trivino available to deal).

Oh there’s plenty of depth. There’s just not a lot of established or high end talent.
How does one stress fracture their rib? Sounds terrible

You know what would have provided some insurance for this sort of thing? Eduardo Rodriguez on a 5/77 deal.

Sale said he told the team about it the day the lockout ended, and the internet says it takes 6 weeks to recover from. This doesn't really sound like a big deal to me.

Obviously isn't news I welcome but some folks in other threads saying "we lost sale" as if he's having TJ again. From what I'm reading it doesn't sound that awful to me.

Reading these Sale quotes, I honestly believe that he could come back and put up DeGrom numbers the rest of the year and he wouldn't opt out because of some sense of honor over how the contract has gone so far.

The reports are talking weeks and not months. Agreed that it's not time yet to act like he's getting TJ again.
This is exactly why you keep Houck and Whitlock stretched out.

So some number of weeks, plus a need to do basically a whole spring training... I'd put the over/under for his first start at June 1, maybe?

This doesn’t worry me at all. Truthfully, I figured he’d be on an inning limit anyway, so starting a little late could actually work out.

Maybe we should be thinking about trades for controllable relievers rather than SP so we can let those two actually start. This injury is a bummer, but Sale is a big question mark even if he was healthy. His days of being an arm you can rely on are gone.

I get the sneaking suspicion that Bloom just isn't all that concerned about the quality of starting pitching. Maybe he and Cora are planning to go all in on the 3-4 inning starter bit, which makes starters simply not as crucial as they used to be. Heck, Sale seems like not much more than a 5-inning starter at this point, even if he IS healthy. We may end up pining for the days of Rod's 5 2/3 inning starts.

The problem is that the pen isnt exactly stellar. This isnt the White Sox bullpen we're talking about.

Was there ever any further talk of expanding the roster to 27? That would help a lot with the huge amount of depth they have.
