At what point are people going to say, "You know it seems like this Bloom guy studies the game closely and has a real ability to evaluate." Umm… longer than 9 games? After the parade? First time he wins the division? Lotsa answers. First time he makes it to the ALCS?

Edit: I agree with the overall premise that Bloom hasn't achieved trust-to-be-infallible-status yet, even as generally a supporter

Glad to see Michael Chavis doing well with the Bucs. Hope he can put together a good season. One of my best friends is a die hard pirates fan, I’ve been getting good reports on him. Seems like a good kid, I hope he can establish himself

I see that popular offseason OF target Tommy Pham is slugging .038 on the year

Well I mean he's been GM since 2019. How about 242 games? You wanna talk about that first season? The decision to not go for it in 2020 seems to be 100% the right one, yes. It got them Pivetta, Mayer and Whitlock to name a few, built depth in the system, and set the team up for future financial flexibility just to punt on a year they were never going to be any good, and that ended up only being a 60 game no fans season.

The irony of blaming a guy aiming for sustainable success for the rebuild caused by his boom-and-bust predecessor ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It got them Pivetta, Mayer and Whitlock to name a few, built depth in the system, and set the team up for future financial flexibility just to punt on a year they were never going to be any good, and that ended up only being a 60 game no fans season. It all worked out for the best, but I really don't think they "decided to not go for it." With the short season and expanded playoffs, they came in with decent chances to try and make a run (40% playoffs odds per fangraphs at the start of the season). But Sale was out all season and Rodriguez was out all season and they had signed McHugh but he never played and they ended up with half their games started by replacement level pitchers or worse. Yet even so, with reinforcements in the form of Pivetta and Houck they went 12-9 to finish the year.
By the same token, it would be very dumb to judge Bloom for the covid season when they were missing their #1 and #2 starters, even setting aside that the roster was mostly inherited from Dombrowski. I mean, I suppose if he hadn't traded Betts they could have gone 25-35 instead...

I was kind of kidding. But saying he’s been here since 2019 doesn’t *help* his case, either!

Is Christian Vasquez going to be this bad an offensive player this season? And I'm not talking about his lack of stolen bases.

Is Christian Vasquez going to be this bad an offensive player this season? And I'm not talking about his lack of stolen bases. Well, good news/bad news.
Good news: he'll improve on his .332 OPS, I'm pretty confident of that.
Bad news: his xwOBAs by year since 2016 have gone .247, .281, .278, .306, .284, .275, and .249 in 2022. A nice clean parabola of mediocrity, now in descent. We'll be fortunate if he returns to his 2021 level.

Folks mocked Bloom's pitching additions, but as of now, if Hill, Diekman, Wacha and Strahm were a law firm, you couldn't afford them.
Statcast xERAs:
1.71 Hill
1.11 Diekman
1.79 Wacha
1.83 Strahm
Seriously.
(Whitlock is 1.79, as is Valdez.)

Multiple Red Sox players, including Houck, are expected to miss the Toronto series as unvaccinated people are not permitted to enter Canada. Players will be put on a restricted list and they will not be paid or accrue service time while on the list.

(Not! About! Vaccines! Just wondering about roster).

To call today’s lineup “top heavy” would be a bit of an understatement...

Rich Hill will make his start today, despite the very recent death of his father. Some guys are willing to do everything they can to help the team, even if it means personal sacrifice. Kudos to Rich Hill.
