In case anyone is interested...Bianca Smith posted the extended spring training schedule, which is open to the public:

So if the guys in extended spring training are playing games against other teams most days why doesn't the FCL just start now rather then July?

So if the guys in extended spring training are playing games against other teams most days why doesn't the FCL just start now rather then July? They're far less structured. Like if they're short on pitchers they probably just play 6 innings, probably don't make up games that get rained out, etc. That said, it's probably a shade archaic given that the FCL is even more informal than it even used to be. I kind of want to ask Brian Abraham about this now the next time I talk to him.

Did MiLB have a contest to see what team could come up with the weirdest and most politically correct name: Iron Pigs, Rumble Ponies, Jumbo Shrimp…. The Red Sox works for me for all the minor league teams.

Teams are cash-strapped and need to generate money. These names are fun for the families and create some unique merchandize that people will buy.

They are also often named after things with local cultural importance, where everyone in the Lehigh Valley knows what an Iron Pig is or in the Binghamton area they know what a Rumble Pony is, so it draws on local pride more than if they just called themselves the LV Phillies or Binghamton Mets.
EDIT: The Greenville Drive are a good example. They were named for a new auto factory (I think BMW) that was built there and employs a lot of locals. I believe there was a naming contest in that case voted on by the fans.
EDIT part deux: I knew that because my aunt and uncle (now just my aunt) retired there -- low-key great town -- but I just looked it up and it turns out when the team moved there from Columbia (and from the MFY system to the Sox, who gave up the Augusta Greenjackets) they had also proposed naming the team the Greenville Joes, to honor local hero Shoeless Joe Jackson, but MLB vetoed it. That would have been among the greatest team names ever, IMO.

Sod Poodles are a fun one. I've gotten some of their stuff passing through Amarillo.

I don’t think I ever seen a better pitching staff than what’s going in at Portland. Don’t get me wrong someone might struggle but you have the next guy that could pitch a gem.

Danny Hamilton just hit his 3rd home run, which is also just the 3rd home run for the Sea Dogs.
Bello through 3 with just 35 pitches.

If Hamilton has added a little pop he’s a very real guy. Like possible MLB starter. I already think he’ll be a solid bench guy

Good stuff from Alex Binelas on the latest Bradfo podcast. www.audacy.com/weei/podcasts/bradfo-show-20499One thing that stood out to me is that he described how playing six-game series is having an effect on how teams scout each other and how the players are forced to adjust. In a long series, as opposed to the old three-gamers, teams have more time to pick at their opponents' weaknesses, so if they find a hole in your swing in the second game, they will go after that for the next four games, rather than just the third and final game. Obviously there is advance scouting in the minors but this is more immediate and involves the same two teams looking for things to exploit for six games in a row. Of course, you're also much more likely to see a pitcher more than once, as well. It'll be interesting to see if guys struggle in the last few games of particular series and if that carries over into subsequent series.

Kole Cottam starting to add walks to his AA game, which follows what he's done at every level thus far: A lot of Ks and no BBs when first learning a new level, then more walks coming as he gets comfortable. And the bat is always there.
A year younger than Wong but probably a little more than a year behind in development but I'm not sleeping on him.

The rumble ponies' name is a reference to Binghamton being the carousel capital of the world. The Iron Pigs are a reference to pig iron, which is part of steel manufacturing (they play in Allentown). 100% co-sign on using local references in minor league team names. I'm a very big fan of that and was a little bit disappointed the WooSox kept the Red Sox moniker, although I get why they did. Just worth checking Wikipedia before dismissing new names as not being such I guess. Edit: some other terrific examples that are personal favorites are the Augusta Green Jackets and the Brooklyn Cyclones. Edit 2: The Lowell Spinners, of course, go without saying as well.

Interesting to me that he has never played a game in the OF, going back to college.

The Red Sox works for me for all the minor league teams. Another issue is that if your team affiliation changes, and you're named after your MLB team, everything changes. Portland didn't have to switch branding from the Portland Marlins to the Portland Red Sox.

Eduardo Lopez has been activated from the IL and is batting second tonight and DHing. The wait on Ugueto and Bonaci continues.

Chris, is that how the teach umping? Essentially shadow the runner staring down to make sure he touches every base?

Nick Yorke out of the lineup for the 2nd day in a row, he's been DHing the 2 games prior to that. Banged up maybe?
