Binelas needs a promotion, he's too advanced for A-ball.

I'll throw in the Modesto Nuts. I was there when the fans voted. That area considers itself the almond capitol of the world.

Sod Poodles are a fun one. I've gotten some of their stuff passing through Amarillo. Sod Poodles is one of my favorites. And of course, the Toledo Mud Hens are the beloved great-grandfather of this genre. The other advantage of having a non-affiliated nickname is that folks will buy gear even if it's not their major league team. To bring everything back to Syracuse, I've got a bunch of Chiefs and Salt Potatoes gear and I'm definitely going to snag some Congueros stuff, but I'm not really into walking around with a "Mets" shirt. Worcester's sort of different because they're obviously right within Red Sox fandom, but I've always thought it was strange they use the Sox name for the Salem affiliate.

Cpl Klinger (M.A.S.H) Mud Hen bobble That said, the grandfather has to be the Durham Bulls which were named after Bull Durham cigarettes and from where the term bullpen originated (Bull Durham posters on the bullpen walls). Salem has an identity problem with Salem witch city and Winston/Salem area being far more recognizable. Hell, it was probably a year before I knew it wasn't Winston/Salem.

I've mentioned before that Winston-Salem has the only team named after punctuation: the Winston-Salem Dash, which (slightly inaccurately) honors the hyphen in the city's name (along with a pun on "dash" = run fast). I've heard people in the crowd yell "go Hyphens"
