Here is my Dream Scenario to salvage some shred of credibility and joy for this season:
The Yankees are currently tanking. Balt & Tampa are playing with energy and the MFY's look like, well, the September 2011 Red Sox. I believe the last three games of the season are against the Sox. How sweet would it be for them to come in needing to win two or more to get into the playoffs and the Sox KNOCK THEM OUT.
Of course, the way the Sox are playing now, could be a difficult task, but, like I said, Dream Scenario - and that kind of situation could actually wake this team up, FWIW.

My dream scenario is losing every game the rest of the year and getting rid of Valentine and Lucchino. And not caring about the Yankees.

If the Yankees win the World Series big deal and it doesn't effect our team building. Good organizations only worry about how to improve their team and those who react to other teams are losers.

I'd like to see the Yanks suffer as much as the next guy but my dream scenario is the one in which the Sox get a high enough pick in the draft to select the next Verlander.

I'd rather have the higher pick too. I can't see the Yankees doing much even if they make the playoffs at this point.

Just for speculation sake on said high pick, here's the recent Top 15 for 2013 from Keith Law (Insider: insider.espn.go.com/mlb/blog/_/name/mlb_draft/id/8309824/stanford-mark-appel-austin-wilson-top-prospects-2013-draft). 1. Mark Appel, RHP, Stanford 2. Ryne Stanek, RHP, Arkansas 3. Austin Wilson, OF, Stanford 4. Sean Manaea, LHP, Indiana State 5. Austin Meadows, CF, Grayson (Ga.) HS 6. Kris Bryant, 3B, San Diego 7. Jonathan Crawford, RHP, Florida 8. Kohl Stewart, RHP, St. Pius X (Houston) 9. Trey Ball, OF/LHP, New Castle (Ind.) HS 10. Clint Frazier, OF, Loganville (Ga.) HS 11. Bobby Wahl, RHP, Ole Miss 12. Trevor Williams, RHP, Arizona State 13. A.J. Vanegas, RHP, Stanford 14. Oscar Mercado, SS, Gaither HS (Tampa) 15. Justin Williams, OF/3B, Terrebonne HS (Houma, La.) It's quite a trip for me to be looking at such high projections as real possibilities (minus a Marrero-esque fall from grace, naturally)...

My dream scenario requires two goats, a bottle of 18 year old scotch, and never drafting Austin Wilson.

Younger than you, and Marilu, but older than the scotch or the goats.

I'd love to see the Red Sox win on the last day of the season to knock the Yanks out of the post-season with TB and Baltimore going to the post-season with Tampa and Oakland as wild cards.
And of course, that Sox victory would run the Sox final record to 68-94, good enough for the 7th pick in the draft, and of course that win wouldn't be enough to blow that 7th pick.
Of course that's the dream scenario. The reality is that the Sox will probably muddle their way to 71-91, get an 11th pick, and the Yanks will recover finish 1st, beat Texas in the ALCS because they have no starting pitching and win the Series because the Nats decided to give Strasburg a vacation in October instead of July..

I think its safe to assume the sox will target a college pitcher with their first pick. My dream scenario is that they get the guy they want

Is there a pitcher in this draft who projects to be a legit #1 starter - preferably a college guy. I mean a transformative pitcher like aPrice, Strassberg Cole or even, Dylan Bundy type?

So the Red Sox lost their final 8 games to finish 69-93 and they did wind up getting the 7th pick in the 2013 draft. So how did that go anyways? If the Red Sox don't nail that 2013 draft, then I hope they don't suck again in 2013! Perhaps they could use a new closer and maybe they should sack the sad sack who managed them in 2012
