There must have been a scoring change on the game before last on the Xander dropped ball. It was re-ruled an error by Verdugo. Maybe that was the replay decision ? Schreiber's ERA is back to 0. Xander caught it. If that's not an out, my name is Dolly Madison

Mookie looking like Mookie lately... His bat has looked more Mookie-like, but his defense hasn’t really been at the same level since 2018. He should still have a 5-6 WAR season this year though

Join the petition: Buy low on Sean Murphy The Red Sox catching situation is really depressing. They just don't have a answer. Maybe Wong can be a backup. That's the best you can hope a year from now when it comes to this group and the future of the Red Sox catching situation.

The free agent class overall stinks but I just took a peak at the catchers and it's actually not bad. Throw money at one of the free agent catchers and run with Wong as the backup next year would be my guess as to what they'll do.

Actually some decent options out there. Can toss a ton of money at Contreras but there’s some decent 1-3 year fillers littered in there too (Narvaez, Casali, Barnes, Zunino, etc)

Devers is up to 5th in the majors in WAR
What the hell is going on with Taylor Ward on the Angels? He's rocking a 1200 OPS despite me having no idea who he is.

Join the petition: Buy low on Sean Murphy Sean Murphy is Mike Piazza compared to Vazquez, but he isn’t anything special on his own. I think it speaks to the lack of quality catchers across the game, in general. Has the entire league of catchers ever been this weak? In the past it seemed there were always a couple superstars out there and several really good ones. Now that Buster Posey has retired and Molina is 147 years old, how many catchers are even league average anymore? Strange phenomenon.

He's been a poor defender at first base, too. The only reason why he's coming in for Franchy is because Franchy lacks the experience at first base. Dalbec's days are numbered once Bloom feels Casas is almost ready. He'll be buried in AAA soon, wouldn't be surprised if he's taken off the 40 man roster in the next year via trade or to make room for someone else. He's 27 and doesn't have any real upside at first base for the Sox. Part of me thinks the Sox could have sold higher on Dalbec at some point, but then there's a part of me that thinks "ehh the league might not think too highly of Dalbec to give up anything good. Some rebuilding team could take him on as a flyer, but that may be it." Why do people keep saying this? He's been a totally different defender since mid-season last year, and other than that bad Story throw against Tampa Bay that everyone blamed him for, he's looked good to me. Making scoops and picks and such. His OAA is +2 at 1B, the best of any infielder on the team. He's looked below average to my eye, mostly due to multiple dropped balls at first that I'm not sure would show up in OAA. I can think of another couple of occasions off the top of my head other than the play in Tampa - there was a double play that should have been turned that he dropped the ball on, for example, and another play with a pitcher flipping him the ball down the first base line that he also dropped. Both balls hit him in the glove and didn't bounce. He just flubbed them.
I don't know how OAA is calculated for first basemen, especially when there's no error on the play or the error is given to someone else, but as far as I can tell the calculation for infielders is based on fielding grounders (which he looks fine at), not catching them (which he looks bad at). Savant only gives him 55 attempts on the season, for example, so unless if some adjustment is made later for scooping and catching they may be ignoring that part of their game. If OAA does take into account catching balls at first in a reasonable way, though, I'm happy to change my mind.

Just 2 random questions about the broadcasts. What happened to the pitch zone box? they showed a couple of times for pitches, but it is not there for each pitch anymore. Are they trying to protect the umps from the bad calls or are they just incompetent in handling it like before. I liked the Amica pitch zone in the lower right corner of the screen.
When the Sox are at home can they give the reporters a microphone for the Cora postgame comments? I can't tell what he is responding too because the reporters sound like they are talking in an echo chamber.

Also where can I find out how many times Kiké has popped out to the right side of the infield this year? Savant has statistics on pull/straight/oppo and batted ball trajectory, so that could at least give a rough estimate. He has a 22.8% pop up percentage so far, which is more than double his career rate of 10.6%. His oppo percentage is only slightly higher than normal, though.

There are 18 catchers with 100+ PAs and 7 of them have a wRC+ at or above 100, which if anything is higher than I would expect. But it's true that there are probably none that you could really call a star. Maaaybe Grandal. (Though is that Adley Rutschman's walk-up music I hear in the distance...?)
Speaking of people julyanmorley has never heard of*, some guy named Daulton Varsho has the highest WAR among catchers in the majors.
*or possibly just me; I guess he was a decent prospect, but also he plays in Arizona, which, no one knows anything about Arizona players, that's a scientific fact
