Probably wouldn't have mattered, but wouldn't the moves been to PH JD for Franchy in the 8th and Xander for Arroyo in the 9th? I mean why not PH JD for Arroyo in the 9th as the tying run? So many questions here

Hopefully the next time they call a pitcher from AAA for a spot start it would be Bello. Wickowski’s stuff is not good enough to navigate through a MLB lineup twice.

Fangraphs says: 33.4% chance of making the playoffs
No-man's land. Lose some more or go on a winning streak please. I don't want to pass up on the giant prospect haul for a team that ends up dead with 3 weeks to go in the season.

Winckowski — who has averaged only 1.7 walks per nine innings in seven starts at Triple-A Worcester this season — struggled with his command. He threw 62 pitches (36 strikes), 58% strikes. “I honestly wasn’t too nervous. The balls were a little different,” Winckowski said. “Really in the first inning, the sinker just kept taking off down on me more than I’m used to. But then after that, kind of just started guiding the ball. I didn’t feel like I could let it rip. But it happens.” How did the balls feel different? “I’ve never described the ball like this but it oddly felt like damp today,” Winckowski said. “It was kind of weird. I don’t know. I was like searching for dry spots on my jersey pretty often, which is something I usually don’t struggle with. But it’s part of the learning experience.” www.masslive.com/redsox/2022/05/boston-red-soxs-josh-winckowski-honestly-my-personality-ill-probably-be-pretty-frustrated-for-a-long-time.html

Are they doing that in AAA as well??

Worst place to be in sports, .500 while trying to compete. You can go on a streak. You might make the playoffs, but how realistic is your championship chances?

I think we are a little early to make definitive conclusions on Winckowski’s career in a game where he clearly wasn’t commanding the ball from the start. Sometimes it doesn’t happen in start 1 of your career! I’d hesitate to draw long term conclusions from it
Does the possibility exist that he’s a reliever? FOR SURE. In fact it’s probably the likeliest outcome. But I’m still a believer in him and I do think the stuff will be good enough to go twice through an order if the command is there. It just wasn’t tonight. Hell, the control wasn’t even there and that’s usually a non-issue for him altogether.
I don’t think he’s a top or mid rotation guy that can leak into the 3rd time through though. I think he’s strictly 4-6 innings and that’s fine- backend guys that can give 4 to 5 solid innings are very valuable

I think he’s strictly 4-6 innings and that’s fine- backend guys that can give 4 to 5 solid innings are very valuable The problem is that he doesn't have more than 2 pitches that gives that much separation. His 2 seamer and slider definitely seem like big league quality, but there's not much beyond that. He has a 4 seem fastball with not much movement, but he can definitely ramp it up in short bursts. Other than that, he has a show me change up and cutter. The board is kind of right in saying he needs a change up or something, like with what Derek Lowe had. He needs to give left handed batters to be honest with 2nd time through the order. The judgements weren't based off results, it was more the eye test and how it seemed the Orioles (major league batters), were making (easy) adjustments off him first time through the order. Not many pitchers can just rely on a great fastball and a show me breaking ball. Bartolo Colon is the only example I can think of who was like this profile that Winkowski could dream of being.

Walter and Bello's starting point is that there's 3 different looks (pitches) that can get any player out from either side of the plate. Maybe I'm just spitballing, but you need typically more than 2 pitches to be a major league starter in the big leagues (imo). Add- I like Winkowski's arm, but there's a difference between a bullpen arm and a guy who can be a starter.

Not really, if he locates like he usually does I don’t see him having a ton of issues twice through. 3 times will be dicey, though you can say that about more than half the starters in the league at this point

WE SHOULD HAVE STAYED WITH REYES AS HE ALWAYS HAD GREAT MINOR LEAGUE NUMBERS UNTIL HE REACHED AA AT YOUNG AGE--LOOKED BETTER THAN WINKY--THEY WERE DOWN ON HIM BECAUSE OF LACK OF VELO BUT HILL GETTING THEM OUT AT 42

I've always found this narrative to be pretty silly. Being a .500 team is a death sentence for NBA teams without a franchise player and NFL teams without a quarterback. It's just fine for a baseball team that already has a decent farm system and lots of money coming off the books.

Foulke DID deserve MVP, and he deserves to be remembered as as responsible as anyone for breaking the curse…. My Sox jersey has his number because of that postseason.
