Winckowski — who has averaged only 1.7 walks per nine innings in seven starts at Triple-A Worcester this season — struggled with his command. He threw 62 pitches (36 strikes), 58% strikes. “I honestly wasn’t too nervous. The balls were a little different,” Winckowski said. “Really in the first inning, the sinker just kept taking off down on me more than I’m used to. But then after that, kind of just started guiding the ball. I didn’t feel like I could let it rip. But it happens.” How did the balls feel different? “I’ve never described the ball like this but it oddly felt like damp today,” Winckowski said. “It was kind of weird. I don’t know. I was like searching for dry spots on my jersey pretty often, which is something I usually don’t struggle with. But it’s part of the learning experience.” www.masslive.com/redsox/2022/05/boston-red-soxs-josh-winckowski-honestly-my-personality-ill-probably-be-pretty-frustrated-for-a-long-time.html I wonder if the "damp ball" was the result of MLB's new humidor. Are they doing that in AAA as well??They are not using humidors in the minors, as they do in all MLB ballparks, this season, and, that exact reference & impact on him, very 1st MLB start, was directly opined on, today, in the lead up to today's game, fwiw (apologies not recalling exactly, as had WEEI on via audacy while out & about and, having already heard it < saw you asked about, as I was catching up on the thread, and, didn't see a reply, so an FYI)

I’m not gonna lose sleep over Denyi Reyes, a guy with a 7.58 ERA in AAA this year.
If he stays up the league will turn him out with a quickness.

I'm just so thrilled with how successful Franchy has been in his return to the majors.

I'm just so thrilled with how successful Franchy has been in his return to the majors. I loved him for the raw tools alone but when I saw how much the ppl covering him in Worcester were excited for him that added to it. It seems like he’s a great person. I want nothing more than sustained success for him

The worst part of the April early May duldrums were how dead this team looked. I know winning builds chemistry, but Franchy has brought a lot of the "smile" to this team. I hope he/they can maintain the offense, Franchy is one of the most likeable players in awhile, something this team desperately needed.

If Franchy stays fixed, whoever fixed him, needs to to stay with the organization. Isnt it amazing how potent this offense can be when other than the big 3 produce.

I don't know how the playing time works out if everyone sticks. Maybe Casas stays in AAA all year. Maybe JBJ starts platooning with Kiké, even though both of them are hitting now.

I’m old enough to remember when Seabold was the prize of that trade, what a gem Pivetta has been

On the post game, franchy gave gedman credit for working him. Figures. One of the more under rated and unsung players in the 50 plus years I have followed the team. A lot of times the 'try hard' guys make the best instructors.

If Cordero picks up and becomes consistent then I wonder how that shapes what we need at the deadline.

I'm just so thrilled with how successful Franchy has been in his return to the majors. I think that the injuries, then the COVID time that denied him spring training, really had something to do with the first impressions many on the board had. Once he got down to Worcester and got it going there was no stopping him. The swing is so fluid and the skillset so imporessive... yes it's sweet to see him take it to the majors.

His record of failure, too. I was a big Franchy basher because, well, he was awful. But this guy is not that guy. I mean… like he has had transplants or something. If it was Gedman or the whole staff at AAA, they are miracle workers. It is one thing to fix a swing, but his *eye* is totally different. He looks in charge now at the plate, whereas before he was entirely on the defensive. I am very happy for him, since he seems like a quality dude and he clearly has put in years of hard work under tough circumstances (including having folks like me snipe at him).

You should be ashamed….lol….just kidding I all seriousness, most people were for sending him down or giving him a DFA, but Bloom saw the raw talent, and the coaching staff and AAA time gave give enough at bats to succeed. Clearly he has changed his approach to a more sustainable and successful approach. The Red Sox have Franchy until the end of 2024 (2 more years than Beni at a much, much cheaper price). As for Winckowski, he may end up being a reliever, but if he can be a 2 inning middleman, that has value too. I loved the trade (in part because I hate seeing guys walk for zero return, and I hate paying for declining year).

But there was always good reason to think the guy he was last year was an anomaly. Prior to 2021 he was basically a league-average hitter with even better peripherals, and was certainly still young enough to think he might show further growth (only 315 career PAs to that point). Then... 2021 happened. I don't know if Gedman, et al. are miracle workers so much as they got him back to what he was. Or maybe he did that on his own.
