One is the first guy they spent big money on after they got slammed for bundling international prospects, and the other is their second rounder last year, Spencer Schwellenbach, who immediately had TJ after signing.

Barbaro Pinero with a clean inning in his rehab outing - he had yet to register an out in three appearances for Salem, allowing 9 earned runs on three hits, six walks, and two hit batters.

FYI, the transaction log actually updated this morning such that he's just on the roster, not rehabbing. I think he's been in Fort Myers since going on the "IL" and they were just working with him on whatever yips he'd developed.

Thomas Pannone is leaving the Red Sox org and signing with the KIA Tigers of the Korean Baseball League, per Joe McDonald.
Wonder if that opens a spot for Chris Murphy in Worcester. They technically could be fine without once Seabold and Winckowski are back and Walter is off the IL, but Murphy seems to be ready for AAA.

On a day in which FCL batters struck out 14 times, Lyonell James picked up 2 hits without a K. He's now hitting .429 (albeit in just 45 PAs) with 6 BBs to 3 Ks on the year.

Claudio Simon must be tired after today’s game. Five stolen bases this morning.

These leagues scout AAA and look for guys like Pannone who are good enough to help teams over there, and MLB clubs typically will agree to release guys to pursue such opportunities if they wish. For context he's probably doubling his salary at least.

The issue with Murphy is there's the potential for a AAA rotation of Bello, Walter, Mata, Winckowski, Seabold in the near future, which is already kicking Crawford to the bullpen (which is fine). They had already pushed Pannone briefly to the bullpen while Walter was first up and Winckowski was still there. The question is do you call up Murphy and if that happens, just piggyback a guy? We might be there. Depends on the prognosis of Walter, Eovaldi, and Whitlock.

Pannone had the second best FIP in the international league. Someone should have been interested in giving him a shot IMO.

It's not that hard to imagine a situation in which it were mutually beneficial for Pannone to move on. It may not have been what happened here, it's very unlikely that it is, but the scenario isn't unreasonable.

YES, YES, YES ,YES. Great job Chris Murphy. well deserved Also as much as i am rooting for Jay Groome, I believe he should stay in Portland all season. No matter what. He will get there. He is going to be special.

Ultimately, even AAAA guys like Pannone has an agent. It's not hard to envision his agent seeing how many starters are on the 40-man ahead of his client and seeing Crawford, Winck, and Seabold getting call-ups (with Bello possibly in the wings); asking the Sox FO if they have realistic plans to call his client up (i.e. without four more pitchers getting hurt); getting a direct answer; and shopping around for alternatives.
Good job by his agent, basically.
EDIT: If I was in his shoes, I'd love to go to Korea. I've been there once and it's a fascinating culture with amazing food...

For a guy like Pannone, the Red Sox aren't going to release you to let you go to another MLB team and potentially help them, even if it means a better chance for you to pitch in MLB. They will release you to play overseas though. He probably doubled his pay at least and gets to go check out Korea for half a season. Why the heck not? Then if you pitch well, maybe you try to get an invite to MLB camp next year.

I would imagine, though, that the first alternative the agent explored was whether another MLB club might be interested in trading for him. The dude surely prefers to pitch in MLB (or in AAA with a legit shot) if the opportunity exists. I highly doubt he was released without an assurance that he was going overseas (perhaps in the form of a PDF of the Korean contract offer).

You just reminded me that I haven't had okdol bibimbap (from the Korean place in the Super 88 food court in Allston) since the pandemic! My brother and I have to give it a shot ...

I figured out went without saying that nobody was going to trade for him. He's a fine AAA pitcher but I don't think anyone is giving up much for the likes of him. And yes, he knew Kia was signing him - that's why he requested his release.
