Can someone shed some light on this Zayas signing? If I am following correctly, he was an UDFA who just signed. Was he a highly regarded prospect going into the draft? MLB draft tracker has him listed but no ranking etc. Not sure how excited to be edit: I think I just found the answer to my question in one of the links above. Kind of odd he would be ranked that well by Perfect Game and that not translated to MLB Draft ranking. Perhaps that's why he slipped? Keep in mind that's the 214th best HS prospect, not overall. That might translate into a fringe top 500 prospect overall or something like that. He's an intriguing guy and a nice UDFA pick up for sure, but I'd temper expectations relative to the rest of our HS crop in this draft.

So, am I missing something or under the new rules is there no reason to want to get drafted once you're past round 10? If you go undrafted, you can negotiate with every team. It's just pure downside to get drafted.
Maybe Zayas and his team figured out the incentives ahead of everyone else
The thing is, the player doesn't get to choose whether or not he gets drafted. Of course you don't want to get selected, but you really have no leverage at that point - the team doesn't care if you don't sign because it loses nothing. Is the rule still in play that if a team doesn't sign one of their players drafted in the first 10 rounds, it loses the slot value associated with that pick? If so, it would make a difference losing some draft cash if it drafted a player that didn't want to be drafted.

I know that positions work themselves out in the long run, but I'm having a really hard time figuring out how they're going to split SS playing time at FCL and Salem for the next year or two.

I guess Litwicki was unlucky that they chose him in the 10th, when savings on his slot could be applied to, for example, Hickey's bonus but his $47,500 bonus was actually the median bonus for guys in the 10th round (his slot was $148,400). Two guys got $5,000 (did they throw in a bus ticket?) and both of them actually played both last year and this year; one is up to high-A in the LAD system (while Litwicki's next appearance will be his pro debut).
It's nice that they seem to have a $100k floor for their draft picks (would be nicer if they did the same for the July 2 kids...). Gotta wonder how they chose Litwicki for that spot rather than one of the guys they drafted later. He probably wishes that he got double the money in the 19th round like Tyler Uberstine.
My two cents is that the low-bonus 6th to 10th round senior sign types really need to be pre-draft deals. The team needs to know that they can save those bonus dollars or else their draft can be held hostage. So they call up a senior who might otherwise be a UDFA type, a player that was not expecting a bonus above $50k or whatever. Team then cuts a deal with the player before drafting them, lets player know they’re not going to try to claw back any of the bonus if the player decides to retire in a year. Team gives them whatever other extra perks that they can legally give the player (locker assignments, scholarship money, travel perks, gear, little stuff). It feels like the player is getting screwed because post-10th round guys can sign for up to $125k, but not every post 10th round draftee gets $125k and these players were not expecting high dollars heading into the draft. Again, just a hunch on my part.

Part of that might just be him having a hotbed for an area too - he's naturally gonna get more than the upper midwest guy, right? And yeah, Fagnant's been around for a while - his first signee was Lou Merloni! www.baseballjournal.com/podcast-red-sox-scouting-supervisor-ray-fagnant-talks-2022-mlb-draft/

Fagnant became a personal favorite when I saw that he was scouting the Steinbrenner Baseball Camp. I forget the player name but we picked a player two slots before the Yankees draft pick.
We won't hold Merloni's talk show against him.

Is it the job of the “signing scout” to persuade the drafted player to forego college and sign for the $ offered? If so, do they get a bonus? Is the bonus bigger if the player signs for less money? Just curious how this works.

Just curious how this works. No they don't get a percentage of bonus or anything like that. I guess teams could have bonuses for the good performing employees but their reward is more job advancement through promotion within the team or another team. For example JJ Altobelli might advance to be a National cross checker in the future or even a scouting director if he does his job well.

I doubt if the scouts have any negotiating power at all. It's more like they take the team offer to a draftee and use the relationship they have developed over time to deal with him (or her, haha) and the family.

No, he's referring to a HS kid like Zayas. The Sox promising to pay for his schooling, i.e., potentially $250,000 or $300,000, doesn't count toward his signing bonus, so he can take "only" $150,000 to sign, but get actual value of $450,000.
These Collazo reports have our signs a bit pricier than Mike's projections. Wonder where they will make up the money.

I assumed we're talking college senior, not high school since every high school player is a senior.
