Which Boston GM is Most Likely to be Replaced?
|
Post by redsoxfan2 on Aug 30, 2022 14:46:08 GMT -5
Wasn't sure where to place this, but figured since it's referring to all four Boston franchises that this would be the most appropriate place for this.
I get this is a very talk radio subject, but there are concerns across the organizations.
Chaim Bloom - Disaster of a 2020 and 2022 season, but went to the ALCS in 2021. The Red Sox have vastly underperformed what they could have been in 2022. Free agent signings and trades mostly didn't work out, whereas everything clicked in 2021. Thought here he was asked to improve the farm, but most of those improvements have come from guys already in the system and picking 4th overall in the draft. Biggest hits have been Mayer, Yorke, Whitlock, Pivetta/Seabold. Still time for some other guys like Winckowski, Downs, Wong, Jordan (though he might I already count in the plus category), Valdez, Binelas and others to breakout and show the system is working. Will have salary freedom next year to see how free agency is handled. He needs a good 2023 top to bottom or show appreciable strides to making the sustained success the Red Sox were looking for. Potential to lose historical SS for a 4th rounder.
Bill Belichick - Roster construction concerns, coaching construction concerns, drafting concerns. The team is trying to instill an offense that doesn't seem to be clicking. The offensive line has looked terrible by all accounts and they didn't look any better when practicing in public and playing in pre-season games. Mac Jones looks to have regressed a bit, the line looks like they can't protect him, the coaches were highly questioned before OTAs began, and the defense appears to be just as lost as the offense. Not signing JC Jackson and moving everyone else up, they don't really have linebackers, they're trying to load up on safeties who were getting burnt anyways and because they're going for speed (like the rest of the NFL) they'll continue to struggle against the run as well. Bill Belichick is the ultimate champion as a coach with 6 rings as the HC and 2 as a defensive coordinator. However, his pre- and post-Brady record has been less than stellar (I'm not one who gives 100% of the success to just Brady, just he's not here to fix things and maybe the coaching quality is degrading at a coincidental time of Brady leaving). He didn't win a playoff game in Brady's last year (also thought is he made it a choice between the two), under .500 the next year with Cam, won a Wild Card and got historically beat in the WC round against Buffalo with a rookie QB, and the team now looks terrible in all 3 phases in camp. If he has a sub-.500 season, does that put him on the hot seat? In all likelihood, the team won't embarrass Bill with a firing, but they might ask him to retire.
Don Sweeney - Not a huge hockey guy, but the scoreboard hasn't been great for him. Terrible at drafting, continues to stick to a core of older veterans that seems to be "just good enough", and fired a popular coach who my hockey friends claim wasn't the problem. One of the Bruins bright young spots, Pastrnak, has made it clear he won't sign as long as Sweeney is the GM. He had an elite core that I know many felt should have had more than the 1 ring. Last few years: R1 Loss R2 Loss R2 Loss SCF Loss R2 Loss R1 Loss DNQ (I believe this was the first year)
Projections this year are maybe that of a 10th best team. Will need to have his team navigate early season injuries to core players.
Brad Stevens - Knocked it out of the park in year one. Really hard to fathom he being on the hotseat. The only thing I can think of is, Brown leaves in two years, Durant looks phenomenal over the next two and maybe even leads the Nets (or whomever) over you and the team just regresses while Stevens either sits idly by (doesn't seem to be his MO) or makes a terrible trade like Smart/Brown for Westbrook and it just blows up in their face. It would take a lot for him to get let go anytime in the near future. Most likely would need the above 3 to somehow hold on and Wyc gets impatient (which again, doesn't appear to be his MO either).

BILL BELICHICK EVER GETTING FIRED LMAO Let's say theoretically they win 5 games next year, is his job still safe? Assuming Mac isn't hurt or something catastrophic had happened.

I think it’s Chaim
Whenever they have to come out and say your job is safe it usually means theres a little momentum tumbling towards your termination. That said if the 2023 Red Sox look good he’ll be completely in the clear. If it’s a repeat of this year he may be let go though (which I think would be a mistake)
Stevens is as safe as can be. Belichick will probably be allowed to go out on his terms. Sweeney seems to be a part of the old boys club. That leaves Chaim.

And even if it all breaks wrong, why should we assume it would happen again? The Hoodie has set an UNPRECEDENTED run of excellence in the NFL, his job is very safe.

He set it with the greatest QB of all-time and already had one season under .500 since Brady left. I don't know if they're better than the 10-7 team of last year and a lot of other teams got better. How I look at the possibility of this season. @ Miami - loss @ Pitt - win Home vs Balt - loss @ GB - loss Home vs Lions - win @ Browns - loss Home vs Bears - win @ Jets - win Home vs Colts - loss Home vs Jets - win @ Vikings - loss Home vs Bills - loss @ Arizona - loss @ Raiders - loss Home vs Cincy - loss Home vs Miami - win @ Buffalo - loss To me, that's 6-11. They could easily win the Browns game and lose the Bears one. They'll likely win a surprise game and have a surprising loss. I don't think they have the roster or the coaches and think they're a notch below the middle teams like the Raiders and Colts. I don't think they'll have an answer for the Colts running game.

Sweeney by a mile with Bloom next! The question was likely to be fired. It should be Sweeney but he’s a Bs insider his job is safe for a few years… I think it’s Bloom by a mile. He won’t get fired this year but if next year is a repeat he’s probably gone, if our ownership is actually present.

Don Sweeney should be gone. If only for Cam Neely.
RE-visit this one looking good Mr Sweeney this is one that I clearly did not know the politics behind the clubhouse. This is one that he felt the pulse of the team. Excellent job.

GOAT coaching performance today. If this continues all year Bill is going to "retire".

BB wants Shula record bad. Shula R.I.P. was talking trash anytime he could against us and BB.
I tell you Chaim is def an important year.

I think B.B would most likely be the first one to retire out of the group. Personally I’M hoping he adds to the staff.

Might be Sweeney now that he signed Mitchell Miller. I don’t think the kid is still under contract by Monday and the decision to bring him in is such a stain on the organization that I’d put Neely and Sweeney on the hot seat for even going down that road

Kudos for predicting the wins and losses and through 8 the only 2 you did not nail, you said are the two that could most easily flip and they did too. So in effect even when wrong you were still right.

Didn't he do what Irving wouldn't and apologized, along with saying all the right things? I mean the Celtics coach was charged with Battery for grabbing a women's neck, along with two other arrests. What am I missing?

Didn't he do what Irving wouldn't and apologized, along with saying all the right things? I mean the Celtics coach was charged with Battery for grabbing a women's neck, along with two other arrests. What am I missing? He did it for 7 years, it culminated in what was basically a hate crime against a black teenager with the mental capacity of a 10 YO. His first “apology” was court ordered and he only recently again tried to reach out to the victim on Instagram to apologize and said his apology had nothing to do with hockey (while signing a week later lol). Then in their statements the bruins and Miller tried to downplay what he did by referring to it as an incident- idk about you but 7 years is quite a long time for one incident to occur. There was a probably about a thousand incidents considering he bullied the dude for more than half a decade. Trying to minimize what he did shows a lack of contrition on his part, and it shows that the Bruins aren’t taking this seriously. And remember this is an organization that preaches diversity, inclusion, and tolerance. They are frequently patting themselves on the back for playing Willy O’Ree- I sure as shit hope they contacted him about this move. If they didnt it’s completely indefensible- there’s a reason why the coyotes and North Dakota removed this kid from their orgs. He’s radioactive Mazzulla made efforts to actually better himself and showed contrition and accountability for what he did- this kid has not and that’s not just me saying that, that’s the victims family. From purely a hockey standpoint he’s a pretty good prospect- he’s probably our 4th or 5th best now. I’m just not willing to compromise the orgs integrity to bring in a #5 ranked prospect and piss off members of the team. The front office obviously is and this kid better turn out to be a top pairing defenseman for the shit stained they just wiped on the spoked B. They trotted Bergeron out to do damage control last night and he clearly wasn’t on board with it. I’d be more accepting of this move if he had tried to make things right with the family over the years but it honestly seems like he ignored them until he was about to sign an NHL deal and then the bruins told him he had to so he reached out and tried to say sorry on Instagram while also saying he wasn’t making the apology for hockey reasons. So not only was it way too little way too late, he even lied in his recent “apology” as he basically signed immediately afterwards. I’m sure we all did incredibly vile things as a teenager that we think about in the shower 20 years later and it makes us cringe-but I think most of us feel badly about it when we do think of those things. I don’t think this kid feels bad because he did it, I think he feels bad because it cost him his dream (until now). At least that’s how it seems given his actions and what the victims family has said. The judge even said at the time of his prosecution that the apology seemed insincere. Multiple teams took him off their draft boards due to his failure to show accountability for his actions- one member of a front office even went as far as to say he embarrassed himself in their pre-draft interview. There’s just not a lot out there that’s shown people he’s grown, and that’s why you’re seeing the most blowback I’ve ever seen a Boston sports team get (outside of total nonsense like Spygate and deflategate)

Now it’s come out that Sweeney and Neely signed this kid without consulting the league- Bettman says he’s not allowed in the league right now and he’s not sure he’ll ever allow him to be in the league. They have caused all of this for no reason at all.
FIRE SWEENEY FIRE NEELY

I guess Sweeney is back on the top of the list. All the good stuff going with the team but I am not blaming the guys. Weak FO. How can you not consult the league. Why get them in there doghouse. You know Bergeron took a huge discount. He’s the face of the team. Who needs this distraction. Who’s idea was this was this kids agent close to Neely?
On to the game tonight. Unreal

Read somewhere recently that cashman is a free agent. Expected to re-up with the spanx of course but if I’m Henry I may at least make a phone call?

Bruins are giving him a chance to show he's a changed person, with a long list of things he needs to do before the thought of the NHL is even an option. I'm perfectly fine with that.

This isn’t cancel culture, this is criminal and it’s years of racist abuse to a handicapped kid that he has yet to show any contrition or accountability for. Is the argument that 14 year olds don’t know any better but to assault and call a teenage black kid with the mental capacity of a 10 YO the n word? Pretty sure every single person at that age knows it’s wrong, and I genuinely think that behavior is irredeemable and sociopathic. That’s not kids being kids and making dumb mistakes, that’s next level. It’s sadistic behavior. I mean he tried an Insta apology last week and told the kid the apology has nothing to do with him getting a hockey opportunity, and then he signed days later. He’s a clown who does not deserve the privilege of playing professional sports in the US. Perhaps if he actually showed accountability for what he did everybody would be fine with a second chance- he hasn’t. Do you wonder why the family of the victim has no problem with the other person Miller was convicted with? Because he’s not a dickless coward and he showed accountability and actually made amends with the family. Go make a career in the KHL if you want to play hockey kid The AHL also seems like they’re probably not going to let him play either. So he probably won’t play a single second in this organization, meaning this clown show of a front office caused this shitstorm with the team for nothing. The only thing this did was piss off their veteran leaders. Wouldn’t shock me if Miller is not under contract by the end of Monday. Bettman seems PISSED at the org. Fire Neely, Fire Sweeney. It’s incredible that they’re as incompetent as they are and the team is as good as it is. Didn’t even ask the league if they should do it….idiots….

There is a reason this 20 year old is banned from the NHL and it starts and ends with his actions since he was convicted in juvenile court. Reaching out to the victim and his family on social media is not the same as directly communicating with them with a face to face apology. To wipe this under the rug and say all is well is really shocking to me as a lifelong Bruins fan. Neely and Sweeney need to CANCEL the contract!

Saying Sweeney and Neely should be fired is absolutely cancel culture. You aren't deemed ready by society to even drive till age 16. You can't drink or smoke till 21. Yeah he was a kid and the list of stupid shit they do is crazy long. Did you ever think maybe his family sucks and his upbringing was horrible? He's shown accountability multiple times, you just think it should be whatever you think it should be or the family. Which I understand, yet that's a big difference. He's not Irving saying he did nothing wrong. Like where is that? I wouldn't have him play right away, I'd make him work the steps for the rest of this year and see what happens. If he's truly changed then move forward, if not you cut bait. I believe in 2nd chances and that people can change, especially kids!
