The deadline to tender contracts to arbitration eligible players is 8:00 pm ET tonight. As a reminder, if the team tenders a contract, the two sides will eventually exchange numbers for 2023, and then eventually either meet in the middle or go to arbitration. For the Red Sox, most tendered players end up meeting in the middle. Non-tenders immediately become free agents. The Red Sox have 9 eligible players. Devers, Verdugo, Arroyo, Pivetta, and McGuire seem like locks to get tendered. The other 4 players, and their MLBTR arb projections, are: - Ryan Brasier $2.3 million
- Josh Taylor $1.5 million
- Franchy Cordero $1.1 million
- Yu Chang $900k
Any predictions? What would you do if you were in charge?

Non tender Brasier, Cordero and Chang.
Taylor is welcome to stay, given the lack of left handed depth options.

Let them all go. $5 million combined can get something decent (or contribute to getting something decent).

Does the $85M available space to the CBT already include this projected $5M and therefore increases to $90M if they are non-tendered?

I don't know what to make of Brasier. The ERA was dreadful, but he had his best season since 2018 by FIP, second best by xFIP and xERA. I'd probably keep him; see how he looks in the spring, and if they have better options I think he'd still at least be tradeable at that salary.
I don't know what to make of Taylor. If he's his pre-injury self or anything close to it he's a good bargain at $1.5 million. Either way the team decides to go I'll assume it's based on a lot more information than I have.
I don't know what to make of Franchy. I feel like he's really been given enough shots at this point and hasn't come through. But the boost in salary is trivial. This one comes down to stuff about options and 40-man construction that is beyond me to figure out. I do wonder if there might be one more team out there that'd be willing to give up a lottery ticket prospect to take a flyer on his tantalizing potential?
I don't know what to make of Chang. Ditto the Franchy stuff, sans the tantalizing potential (though I do think he's good depth worth having in AAA if the roster stuff makes sense).

I think Brasier is back. Taylor who knows
I'd be cool with a Refsnyder, Arroyo, Chang, Franchy bench with no full time DH. I don't think they're going that direction though. With Valdez, Hamilton and Downs on the 40, plus Koss at AAA, Chang probably has no interest in the WooSox. Franchy they should want to keep around on a premium minor league deal.

I'd be inclined to say Brasier's a NT candidate, but BOH referring to him in the same group as Barnes, Schreiber, and Houck at the GM meetings is probably a preview that he's not going anywhere.
Not saying I agree, but just would be a weird thing to say about a guy who you don't expect on the roster in a week.
Generally, I have a feeling nobody gets non-tendered unless it's another Marco Hernandez/Josh Osich situation where they get non-tendered then immediately re-sign on a split deal both sides like better.

Let them all go. $5 million combined can get something decent (or contribute to getting something decent). You'd need to replace them with someone. Even if all replacements were league MIN, it wouldn't be $5M off the books. SPChris probably nails it with the NT then immediately re-sign on a split deal with Franchy and Yu. I have no idea what to do with Taylor. They seem to like Braiser too.

I mentioned some of his peripheral stats above, but Brasier also had a 3.12 SIERA in 2022, the best of his career. Also an excellent walk rate. (Maybe even a walk rate that was too low, as his problem was giving up a lot of hard contact; maybe too many balls over the plate.) I don't think they're likely to find a more promising option on the FA market for $2.3 million. The more I look at his numbers, the more he seems like an easy tender to me.

I am sure they’ll keep Brasier, and really a few million is not a big thing. He just is, er, not my favorite? In the end, you are right. Financially it is irrelevant.

Put it this way - these players making it through the non-tender deadline does not mean they will be on the opening day roster. It's a chance to remove them from the roster without exposing them to waivers, which is why it's useful in those re-sign situations, but that then also means that a player being non-tendered isn't necessarily gone either.

Taylor is the only guy I'd definitely tender. If he gives you anything, he's a bargain at his projected arb salary. I'd also be Ok with tendering Chang because the delta between what he'll make and what a minimum salary guy would make is so small.
I'm done with Franchy and Brasier.

I’m satisfied that they kept Brasier. Relievers that pound the strike zone (1.88 BB/9) are a very useful commodity.
