Taking nothing away from Kershaw who is a lock first ballot HOFer, but he pitched to pitchers and he didn't pitch his career in Fenway and in the AL East nor in the steroid era where 97 pound weaklings could go yard at any moment. He's a great pitcher, but he's no Pedro. Yeah, I tend to agree there. Much of his ballyhooed numbers were on the back of some pretty weak NL west competition as well for most of his career. Many of the years, the Padres, Colorado, Arizona were essentially doormats, add to that the unbalanced schedule that saw him face said doormats 18 times a year a piece and then his choking for most of his career in the post season and... Don't get me wrong, you have to play in the league you are in, and he is a certain first ballot HOF'er. I hate comparing players of any era anyways. It's as lame as the Jordan/Bird/Lebron debate. The best of the best will rise to the occasion regardless of era because at their core they are competitors.

I'm sure the Red Sox media guys who were giving the team sh*t for not having a full crowd on re-scheduled games on a week day will be all over this, right?

Not exactly going to be easy to do with all their long term deals given out the last few years. Wonder if that means Soto is available in a trade since he's not going to help the affordable factor with the type of deal he's going to be looking at.

Article says they want a payroll of $200 million. Looks like they would be roughly around that number without signing any free agents and with four starting pitchers leaving.
Prob not a good time to buy a Juan Soto Padres jersey. Don't think they're going to get a massive haul for him with one year left, a $30 million salary and some ugly defensive metrics keeping his WAR totals out of the stratosphere.

The Cubs are now tied with the Dbacks for the second wildcard. Interesting team to compare to Boston in that they are two years out from their teardown. They added Jeimer Candelario at the deadline and that helped spark a post deadline winning streak. Jordan Wicks has been just what the rotation needed with Stroman out. Hats off to old friend Jed Hoyer who has done a very good job balancing investment in the minors with fielding a below-luxury tax on-the-field team that is competetive. Now, are they in the NL Central? Yes. But man, would I be happy to have an 82 win club right now.

That they traded like half their entire farm system for Soto, and either had no tangible plan of how to resign him, or did but got distracted by every possible shiny object (Darvish extension, Xander, etc) until they got to this point, is sheer lunacy.

"Team officials have been talking for more than a year about getting costs under control as spending increases have outpaced their revenue increases. In part because they are out of compliance with MLB regulations regarding their debt service ratio, according to multiple sources, the plan is to go into 2024 with player commitments of around $200 million," via Kevin Acee from the Padres beat. Is the debt service ratio excuse a real thing? It sounds like a made up reason to cut payroll that is designed to sound like a mandatory policy, instead of the more optional CBT-reset excuse. The "we knew we needed to cut spending a year ago" thing sounds awfully familiar... Has anyone heard of that before? Watch Chaim take over when Preller is fired and the first thing he is does is trade Juan Soto. A man can make an honest living as the "guy owners need to trade their superstars on expiring contracts to save money."

Is the debt service ratio excuse a real thing? It looks like lots of teams have been in violation of this, and only Frank McCourt got in trouble. So I guess it can be used as a pretext to go after an owner that they want to get rid of already, but that's about it. Union supporters get very annoyed at MLB for using it to cry poverty.

Soto and Bogaerts for Verdugo & Yorke. Who says no? probably the Red Sox, that Xander contract is still an abomination Edit to add: just looked up his Savant page and his xwOBA has actually gone down during this hot streak he’s on

Yeah the point was at the time of the deal Verdugo was a 50 level prospect and had already had a 2 win season at the MLB level. Maybe star was the wrong word but he clearly had at least very-good-MLBer potential (rather than just average as he ended up never really improving at all).

This happened 09/23/1998 after the Cubs had a 7-0 lead in the game; they were up 6-0 tonight.

Cubes broadcast was apocalyptic Maybe they'll bounce back like the Orioles have after that NH kid dropped the game-winning catch at Fenway in the first series of the year.
