If you don't believe they can build a legitimate contender as is, then how do you think they were going to do it by trading a goalie in a market where teana were gouging those that were tight against the Cap?
They would not have gotten anywhere close to value for either goalie this offseason.
Maintain what you can and make your move later (yes, while being competitive).
Wouldn't surprise me if one of the goalies was gone before the deadline.

Definitely wasn’t a good time to sell the vezina winner off unless you just wanted a 2nd or something Quite frankly I’m not trading the Vezina winner for anything less than a 1st People freak out about losing Bergeron and Krejci but again- they went 3-1 without them in the playoffs against the team that made it to the cup. It’s still a good team without them. It won’t win the presidents trophy, but that doesn’t really matter

Bruins signed John Farinacci out of Harvard, was a Coyotes 3rd round pick who understandably didn’t sign with that organization
He could compete for a bottom 6 C role out of the gate

The athletic posted a couple articles recently. One was a system ranking and for the second year in a row the Bruins were dead last. They also did a ranking of the top 23 and under talents. The list went 165 (or so) deep and the Bruins didn’t register one player on it. Unless I missed someone, but I’m fairly certain I did not.
So what’s the play? You have Pasta and Charlie signed long term - they are 2 legit building blocks. Should they hard core sell off the other pieces they have, basically tank for 2 years and try to reload while those guys are still in their Primes? They obviously aren’t doing that, but there’s no chance they compete in the next 2 years regardless…

Personally, I think the system is better than Pronman suggests (even if the ranking is right, I feel like there are more guys who are "NHL Players" vs "Have a Chance" and the top of the list are more likely to be middle of the lineup contributors than Corey predicts).
The point remains, however. I think the future will depend on:
1. Improvement internally from young(ish) players. On the roster, I'm looking at Swayman, Zacha (becoming a legit #2 C) and Frederic (legit #3 C?) specifically. Sway and Frederic would allow you to trade Ullmark and Coyle for pieces. 2. Prospects developing and contributing at a higher level than CP projects. Outside of Lysell and Lohrei, Poitras is my biggest hope. At some point, their development process has to produce some guys to replace what talent acquisition can't or hasn't. 3. Trades. Not sure they are bad enough to tank this season (they'd have to be Worst 10 bad since their 1st is only protected for those picks). But they can be "meh" enough to warrant moving players to contenders at the deadline this year. Grz and Ullmark are easy candidates. Also think JDB, at some point, might be their best chance at getting a C who can play on the top 2 lines.
We'll need some luck to be more than "middle of the pack", for sure.

I think the system is deep with guys who will play in the league, it just doesn’t have the upside some orgs have (which makes sense given all the trades of draft picks they’ve made while trying to compete as well as their usual draft position when picking)
Lotta safe types

They really seem to be giving Matthew Poitras a significant look. Is about to play his 4th preseason game (tonight would also make it back-to-back).

Sounds like Poitras, Beecher and Lohrei all made significant pushes to stay on the roster last night. There is rationale to keep Lohrei down in the AHL to start the season (he needs 30+ MPG and isn't getting that or significant PP time in Boston) but the other 2 seem to now be favorites to make the team. We'll see if Monty agrees.
That being said, another young D seems to also be making a push. Many feel that Mitchell is likely to earn the 7th defenseman spot over Zboril.
Lastly, Heinen would appear to have earned a contract. If they waive/bury Greer, Boqvist, Brown and Zboril they can add the 3 youngsters and gain a little space (about 100k I think).

They nailed Lphrei and I love Lysall. Imagine plus they hit on a dam good goalie too. Those two there plug in play as soon as there in Boston.

To answer your question regarding gouging, you could only do that if you know there is no-one else out there competing for the same thing you'd like to add, once you believe their is others out there competing for the same thing you are, then the leverage goes back to the team trading, never mind they don't have to make any move either. I agree with the rest of it.

They went with Beecher/Lauko over Brown/Greer. The right decision, and I’m surprised they did it.
Lohrei to Providence but he’ll be up at some point
If Poitras can stick in that 2C role (a big ask but so far so good) they are going to be a very good team again
Pronounced Pot-trah for those wondering

Frederic with a sweet tip for the centennial seasons first goal, Poitras his first point on it
Ullmark has been very good imo, defense seems sloppy to me

Bottom 6 was great
Thought all the guys making their Bruin debuts (or return in Lucic’s case) looked good to great. Lauko was fantastic too. Shattenkirk can get shots through which is a nice change of pace. Geekie was steady and was involved in some scoring chances. Beecher had a sick pass to JVR- got his first scrap out of the way too. He was born for the 3/4C role in Boston.
