Well, crap on that. Just one of those nights. A bad outcome with some really good things (and just enough bad things, unfortunately)

Tough loss. But still lots to like. Paxton, Duran, Wong, Valdez. And we always battle

Starting pitching great and the bullpen blows it. It’s like the season turned upside down lol

Ohh boy that's rough but that's also baseball. If Paxton can stay on the mound and look the way he did today that's gonna be a giant boost.

Not for nothing there were more runs out there.
Earlier in the game Paxton threw a meatball to Arenado.

Gonna have at least 60 rough games a year, unfortunately.

If I had to chose between Paxton sucked but the Sox won or Paxton was awsome but the Sox lost, I'd have gotten my choice.
If I remember right Valdez was playing in front of his family for the first time (teachers), a feel good moment.

That was a big disappointment. The game had the makings of a feel good night.
Paxton was great. That's the kind of performance that makes you think that if it gets to October, you take your chances with resurgent Sale, blossoming Bello, and a vintage Paxton. Of course they might be better off if they put him in bubble wrap until then.
They got homers out of Valdez (in front of his family no less) and Wong, the 8/9 hitters.
They even staged a comeback.
But Winckowski and Jansen were so bad tonight they negated a lot of the good feelings.
Winckowski blew a potential win for Paxton and Jansen lost the game, which now puts them in 4th place again and just barely ahead of NY. Disappointing outcome.

One thing with Winck is he’s been missing a lot fewer bats as of late, same thing we saw as a starter. Don’t know how successful he’ll be with that profile long term.

That was different. Starting pitching was very good, but the bullpen lost the game. Be nice for those to synchronize on the plus side.
I agree, they may have found the inflection point in Winckowski's usage rate if they were looking for it.

Paxton showed he can still pitch after missing almost two years. i dont think anyone expected his pitching line if you were asked to predict it this morning

Now that Casas is hitting well there has to be a target for animosity and this week it is Kiké He’s earned it, though. He has been a noticeable negative this year. You can actually SEE that negative WAR.

Another reason why Houck should be put back in the bullpen. You need a 2nd long reliever with Kutter Crawford. You keep Winckowski to the low leverage situation or you demote him back to AAA where you build him back into a starting role and keep him for depth.

Triston Casas on-base streak update!
All of New England is rapt as The Streak extends to 21 games. He's hitting .200/.376/.369 in 85 PAs since it began, good for a 112 wRC+.
Since 4/24: .263/.383/.526, 145 wRC+, in 47 PAs.
Last four games: .400/.538/1.100, 318 wRC+ in 13 PAs. Forget Ruth or Bonds, he's been better than Adam Duvall this week.

Paxton’s fastball command was a lot better than I was expecting, even if he obviously missed by a lot on the Arenado HR. It seemed like he was having a hard time getting the curve and change in the zone (only watched first two innings, then listened), but they tended to be fairly close and not noncompetitive. I feel a little silly for doubting that he could outpitch anyone in the rotation; I thought his command would have been awfully poor after that long away from the mound. Very encouraging.

It sucks but Winchowski and Jansen are allowed bad games, can’t even blame them, can’t be perfect.
The rotation is throwing me for a loop here
I swear our best rotation very well could be
Sale Whitlock Paxton Crawford Houck
Kluber and Pivetta have been and are probably just absolute trash. Houck has a FIP of 4.03 and is 26 much rather have him in there
Pivetta just needs to go if he is going to suck and have a bad attitude.
The lineup is quite surprising, even last night they did their job

Wild card is Paxton and if he continues to repeat what he did last night over a run of starts. I wish it was not going to be 7 days until he goes again. Kluber and Pivetta are a dilemma. Both have always been starters and there is no promise that they will adapt and be effective in bullpen roles. The " you can't have enough starters" philosophy suggests each must be kept, so Sox have to try and work them in to meaningful roles in the pen.
