Sweeney offered nothing they don't still have in Maier. But they made the decision to go with 5 1B/LF/DH on the 25-man roster instead of an extra OF and so far it hasn't really made a material difference - a little extra hitting depth vs a little extra fielding depth. They can't call up Maier or anyone else not on the 40 man without letting someone go and they clearly don't want to do that. It's not so much Sweeney's level of play but the extra roster flexibility he would have provided had he made the team. Right now the Red Sox are spending a 40 man roster spot on a player they whom they would clearly prefer to keep in the minors for all of the reasons iakavos stated earlier in this thread. But they could have kept Bradley in the minors without using a 40 man roster spot. Even if you think that Sweeney isn't that great a player, and likely would have been cut anyways once Ortiz came off the DL, you still could have used the roster spot to find a decent replacement for Victorino either inside the organization with Maier or Hazelbaker or gone out and made a trade for someone that could play RF. As it is, because the 40 man roster is full the Red Sox have no choice but to either wait for Victorino to heel or call up Bradley to play RF if Victorino must be disabled. I believe that if the Red Sox did have the open roster spot to add a veteran RF, they would have done so and disabled Victorino. Then we wouldn't be seeing both Gomes and Nava in the same OF which isn't tenable.

They decided to create one to add Bradley. If you're saying that the 40-man roster is full, and adding Bradley was not ideal from a roster management standpoint, I think we all know that. That's not the same as needing Sweeney for any reason since as you state he would have had to have been DFA'd regardless. If they really wanted to add Maier, they could free up a spot for him, just like they freed one up to add Bradley. Look, I'm rooting for Dan Butler, let's say, to make the majors, but it really doesn't amount to much if another team claimed him.

Mitch Maier hasn't played in Pawtucket since Monday. Not in starting lineup for second game after not playing first game of DH today. I wonder if he's waiting in a hotel room?
Move would probably be Hassan to 60-day, Maier up if Victorino goes to the DL. In effect, for Hassan it only would be 40 days, because he could do a 20-day rehab assignment. He can probably be put on retroactive to April 1, so we're talking May 10 as a return date? He'll probably need some time in XST to shake the rust off anyway.

Why DFA him? You have nothing to lose by putting Hassan on the 60-day at this point.

If/when Aceves goes they'll want that spot for another pitcher I'd imagine.

I don't understand Farrell, He doesn't know how to handle WMB. All year I have been watching where he places him in the lineup and the best this kid got behind him was Salty. No wonder nobody pitches to him. Don't get me wrong he has to have better game plans than what he has been showing. But why can't he have a little protection for a 2 weeks stretch? This kid is your future you have to do whatever you can.
I have to admit I am a big fan and rooting big time for this kid to succeed.

Sweeney offered nothing they don't still have in Maier Mitch Maier, career: .248/.327/.33, 82 wRC+, -3.6 UZR/150 in RF, -1.7 UZR/150 in CF Ryan Sweeney, career: .280/.338/.378, 94 wRC+, 14.2 UZR/150 in RF, 2.5 UZR/150 in CF But I won't belabor the point that the Red Sox should have kept Sweeney instead of Bradley. I don't think it's much of a debate anymore. I do agree that Dan Butler should probably be a DFA candidate. Even if you believe (as I do) that the Red Sox shouldn't interrupt Christian Vazquez's development by making him 3rd on the catcher depth chart, Lavarnway has essentially been catching full-time since the beginning of 2012 now, and if he's not good enough defensively at this point to fill in as a backup catcher at the major league level for a few weeks, there's no point in keeping him on the 40-man roster.

I am a big fan too, but not sold that he is the Sox future at 3rd. In fact I think Cecchini may challenge him by 2015. Superior OBP and plate discipline and potential for 15-20 HR power (potential is stressed). That said, Will needs to adjust to the strike on the outside 1/3 of the plate. He'll keep getting pitched there until he shows he can do so. Nothing I'm sure he hasn't heard, but going with the pitch and establishing he can cover that zone will have pitchers re-adjusting when those balls start finding holes and outfield grass. Til then he'll be seeing heaters on the outside black and breaking pitches down and away, unless someone makes a mistake.

Hassan to the 60 DL clearly is the logical move to open up a spot on the 40. Breslow might be a candidate if he doesn't do better with his rehab effort.
The only other possible cut is Butler, and given the weakness at catcher, that doesn't seem very likely.
At some point I'd like to see Hazelbaker get a shot. Three straight years of .800+ OPS should not be taken lightly.

Why does this feel like a classic "trap series" to me? Probably just a bad thought on my part but I agree anything less than 3-4 is a FAIL. And over here you have Humber and Bedard - against both of whom many of the current Sox have poor head-to-head numbers. And this is a homer happy team (albeit also K crazy) so if they keep it close they always have a puncher's chance in the late innings. I won't feel better until the Sox are looking for a sweep Sunday.

Gomez was out the door regardless.....and he's really not that valuable if you have Carp and you are giving Nava a first baseman's mitt. What they have left is more valuable which thus makes cuts harder. I'll demonstrate my thinking with the example you used and also the one Chris used.
Let's take your example first of Butler. As you said, Butler likely isn't going to be much more than a good backup at the major league level. But he is a catcher whom you could put in the majors tomorrow and be credible and that's valuable. 2010 shows how quickly you can run through your depth at catcher and suddenly be stuck with Kevin Cash. Or worse yet you might have to force feed Vazquez into the majors when he's still developing.
Victorino doesn't appear to have a long-term injury so whomever you bring up to replace him might not be in the majors in three weeks and might not be back at all. Do you really want to cut Butler and weaken your depth at catcher so you can put a minor league veteran like Mitch Maier on the roster for three weeks? I'd be very hesitant to do that.
Chris proposes either DFAing Hassan or putting him on the 60 day DL. Like Chris I would personally have no problem with DFAing Hassan but the Red Sox clearly like him more than I do and this isn't going to happen. He isn't on the major league disabled list either, optioned March 12th, so he could not even begin a rehab assignment for 40 days. They would also have to pay him the major league minimum while he was on the DL which I am sure they would prefer not to do. But even if you did want to spend the money and put Hassan on the major league DL and have him rehab for 40 days, all it really does is kick the can down the the road. Someone would eventually need to be cut.
None of this is necessary of course if Bradley isn't taking a 40 man roster spot. They find a guy to play RF and put Victorino on the DL as opposed to the charade they are going through now.

That would make sense if Middlebrooks was getting pitched out of the zone, taking walks, and then Salty was K-ing behind him. But pitchers aren't throwing Middlebrooks balls because they aren't afraid of facing Salty, they're throwing him balls because that's how you get him out.

its kinda funny looking on gameday at how tiny the strike zone is for this batter because he is so short

This looks to be a laugher already, but McClelland is certainly helping our cause. He needs some glasses.

epic fail there by both the hitter and the outfielder. That is why when you are playing a professional sport you don't walk.

Let's not rehash the argument over lineup protection when discussing Middlebrooks' current issues at the plate. Every article and study I've seen about it have shown it to be marginal at best

Big Papi, rocking the Napoli-esque unbuttoned uniform top, absolutely crushes a ball to dead center. He's been dynamite since returning-- who cares if he's slower than ever on the basepaths when he's crushing them like that?

before that double play buccholz had 5 straight outs via the k. Of course there were some hits and a run in between.
