On the main board Mike asked for new members to sign up. I just did. I was a fairly longtime member on the Yuku board under another name. I mostly lurked but posted occasionaly. I thought maybe it might be a decent idea to have people here introduce themselves a bit and briefly discuss their fandom and their particular interest in prospects as opposed to their interest in the Red Sox in general.
Me:
I'm in Charlotte, NC. I get to see one Pawtucket series every year here. I became a Red Sox fan when I was ten years old. Lynn and Rice had just come up and it was easy for a little kid who had no regional allegience to any team to root for two dynamic rookies like that. During the many difficult years between 1975 and 2004, I often wished I could give up being a Red Sox fan and simply root for another team. It is not in my nature to switch loyalty from one team to another so I went through that purgatory as stoically as possible (I am also a painfully frustrated fan of the Miami Dolphins...another team that has been hard to root for).
I am not sabermetrically inclined at all and don't enjoy studying advanced statistics. I get a lot out of reading the analysis of others in the threads here, but it would bore me to tears to look at somebody's BABIP, WAR, UZR, etc. I watch about 90 games a year on TV. I get to a game in person every other year or so (usually road games).
My interest in prospects really began with Hanley Ramirez. He is the first prospect that I remember following well before he reached the majors. My current "favorites" are Brandon Jacobs, Ty Buttrey (he went to high school in my part of Charlotte) and Bogaerts for obvious reasons. When I first found the SoxProspects site sometime in 2006 (or maybe 2007) I was thrilled to find such in depth information about a topic I enjoyed so much.
The Greenville Drive are about 90 minutes from me, but I have yet to get to a game there. I am exceptionally busy with work and two kids that I coach in Little League. I had an interesting brush with "fame" a couple of years ago when Quincy Boyd, who was then the area scout (but is now a regional cross checker?) agreed to give a hitting lesson to my son's summer all star team. I sorta freaked him out when I started talking with him about guys he had signed and their progress in the system (I think Federowicz had just gotten promoted and Boyd laughed at me like I was a stalker when I began discussing that with him).
I'd be curious to know about other "new" members and also any of the old vets and regular posters.
