So Sale comes back - got to be Llovera who goes down? Whitlock on Sunday - who goes down...Murphy, Walter or Barraclough? I suspect Houck soon, making one of the remaining two head back to Woo. Our staff will finally start to look like a good staff.

Good Jansen came tonight. 4 games back. 1 full game ahead of the Yankees. Hal Steinbrenner told the world Cashman has a job for life today. Life is getting better. Whenever I feel sad I like to think about how Giancarlo Stanton has been a sub-1 WAR player in four of the last five seasons and is signed with the Yankees through 2027 We are fortunate Hal is not even a shadow of his father. Besides pledging allegance to Cashman the only thing I have heard him say all summer is he is a huge advocate for a hard cap in 27. Apparently on his priority list winning is particularly high.

I know he said Cashman was safe for 2024. He was not as supportive of Aaron Boone, however. If they miss the playoffs, he HAS to be on the hot seat.

Cashman must have some serious dirt on Hal. Only explanation I can fathom for how his job is still safe despite all the bad moves he has made. George would’ve fired his ass 10 years ago

Winning three of four is acceptable but where are the bats? We know this team can hit and has hit well against good pitchers so this long cold stretch is hard to fathom.

What a player Bobby Whit Jr is. The one guy I'd probably trade for Mayer. This is hyperbole, right? Mayer hasn’t exactly dominated at AA. I know it’s taboo to disparage him on this site, but the results simply haven’t been there. I’ll leave it at that.

Yeah..where are the bats? what is a hitting coach supposed to do? they are looking at videos and seeing what they are doing wrong so what reason do they need a hitting coach if the videos are their hitting coach nothing is better than Fatse. I say abolish the title of hitting coach becsause he isn't helping them one twit.

Our staff will finally start to look like a good staff. I suspect they will keep one of the lefties, at least until Rodriguez comes back, but yeah they have plenty of candidates to send down. I am wondering who is going to pitch the last few innings tomorrow. Have to believe at least a few of the 4 guys they have used the last 2 games (with 3 of them being used in 3 of the past 4 games) are not going to be able to go tomorrow. Would be nice if Sale could go 4 innings and Murphy the next 5, but I kind of doubt that is going to happen. Would also be nice if they could score some damn runs and get a big lead so it doesn't matter who pitches the last few innings.

Llovera will get a DFA as Soxprospect lists him as having no remaining options. Murphy stays.

The latest snapshot in “This Year vs Last Year”:
Game 115
2022: 56-59
Tampa has last WC spot at 59-53. Sox 4.5 games back - need to leapfrog White Sox, Twins, and Orioles as well.
2023: 60-55
4.0 games back of Toronto (65-52.) Need to leapfrog Mariners too.
At around this same point last year, Chris Sale had just fallen off his bike somewhere outside Chestnut Hill. Tomorrow, he returns to the mound at Fenway Park.

Hard to find those in baseball.

I assumed it when he said "Firing Cashman isn't even on the table" just today. He's been there for 30 years and Hal has always defended him. Even now when it's not easy to defend him. Firing Cashman would be a mistake. He's a very good GM. I don't get how some Sox fans think Cashman is terrible while lauding Bloom. I understand they haven't won a ring since 2009, but they very rarely miss the playoffs. 2023, 2016, 2014, 2013, 2008, 1993 (Cashman hired in 1998). Now, don't get this twisted, I'll take the Red Sox recent success over anyone, but just comparing missing the playoffs. 2023, 2022, 2020, 2019, 2015, 2014, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2006, 2002, 2001, 2000. In 25 years Cashman missed the playoffs 5 times. In that same span the Red Sox have missed 13. Under Bloom they have missed 3 out of 4 so far. Again, not saying I'd rather be the Yankees just pointing out that the GMs job is to make a competitor and he's been mostly successful at it. I don't see how this season you can fully blame him. Severino just decided to be one of the worst pitchers in baseball. Rodon was an elite pitcher in 2022 and 2021, but the history on him prior isn't great. Still, he's been hurt and much worse than expected. German was up and down, but now done for the year due to alcoholism. They lost another decent reliever due to either domestic or child abuse. Jhony Brito has been a disappointment after being called the best arm in their system. Nestor Cortez has an ERA 1 full run higher than his career ERA this year. The offense was kind of bad, but before Aaron Judge broke his toe in a fluke accident he was able to mask a lot of their issues. It was a bad year for their organization and I do hope they fire him because I think he's a very decent GM. There are certainly worse out there.

On the other hand, it doesn't really feel like an 89 win team should make the playoffs. Though it would certainly be annoying to watch happen while the Twins and Marlins or whoever are getting in with like 83 wins.

In an ideal system maybe not. But most years with 3 wild cards the last team in will win a lot less than whatever the third AL wild card ends up with this year.

Playoff odds 13% Sox, 9% MFY. We are on the rise. Gonna need 80-100 quality innings from; Sale, Whitlock and Hauck. Be nice if the offense woke up too. Might need a shot of Ceddanne.

Koji Martin. I need more runs, can't trust Kenley to protect a 2 runs lead Not sure if this is sarcastic or not, but I really don't understand the people that get tense with Kenley. Since May 20th (after his two blow up games against the Cardinals following his 400th save), Kenley has around a 0.85 ERA and is 15/15 in SVO or when he comes in leading in a game. This dude is getting better with age. Everyone was freaking out after his velocity ticked down during that incredible April run, but it's now August and from what I've seen in every appearance over the last 2.5 months, he can dial up 96-97mph whenever he needs to. Cora's management of his innings has without a doubt played a big part in that, but still... Love the dude. Him and Martin might be the most dynamic duo in baseball over the last couple months.

And the way I look at it with the hitting.. if you're going to have your worst collective stretch as a team at the plate, better that it happen now against the Royals than end of the month against the Astros....
Praying to the baseball gods for our captain, Justin Turner.

I really thought he was toast at that point. So glad to be wrong. And it's very nice to have a plan for the 8th and the 9th that works; such a huge change from last year.
