They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). The point is to make these threads worth participating in and fun for all posters, from our long-time fixtures to people just signing up today. -The Management

The Red Sox need to win 3 of 4 here. A split won't cut it.
Hopefully Trevor Story can finally become a useful player this series.

Who is Houck jettisoning from the rotation? Crawford or Pivetta?

I'll be there Wednesday! My third time seeing the Sox live since 2019 and, randomly, my third time seeing Sale (not that I'm complaining about that)

Need to win series to move forward. No more ifs. One series at a time. A split won't cut it.

I'm sure their mindset today, tomorrow, the next day, and so on for the rest of the season is "let's win tonight". No one is playing for a certain amount of wins out of 4.
A split on the road in Houston is objectively not a bad result. 4/7 would give us the tiebreaker, would give us another game on Houston, and would keep the momentum going. Anything more would be fabulous, of course, since every game is a two game swing in the standings, but what we really can't do is win less.

3-1 here would go a looooong way in the WC race.
Javier is in the midst of a really tough stretch hopefully they can jump on him… don’t love the odds in G2 with Verlander going, G3 Urquidy is nothing special.
Could definitely see the Sox going into the last game of the series 2-1 with their ace going…

It feels a little early to me to start the "they need to win X of Y" and counting games and that kind of stuff. It's still early enough that each individual game doesn't matter so much. They just need to keep winning games.

Who is Houck jettisoning from the rotation? Crawford or Pivetta? Gotta be Pivetta I think? Move him off an every 5 day cycle but keep in a 3+ inning role is I think my preference.

Checking on bullpen availability tonight, barring something unexpected they should have:
Bernardino, Whitlock, Murphy, Llovera (probably his last day on the team?) - pretty much full go Jansen, Martin, Winckowski - likely available but probably unavailable tomorrow if used Schreiber, Pivetta (if he is moving to the bullpen) - unavailable

They just need to keep winning games. I mostly agree, but 3/7 against Houston, even if we sweep LAD, would put us in a very tough spot. We have a much harder schedule than the teams in front of us and a deficit in the standings with two teams still to pass, so most roads to the playoffs seem to start by locking up the tiebreaker with Houston and gaining ground on them in head-to-head games. It's certainly possible that two of Houston, Seattle, and Toronto stumble against easy competition down the stretch and we can chase them down regardless, but the odds have got to be quite long on that.

If you had told folks on here at the start of the season that the Sox would have a good year developmentally, wouldn’t make any bad trades and the Yankees would collapse, most on here would’ve taken it I’d say.
It’s all gravy now in my book after this past weekend.

If the Sox take 3 of 4 in this series and Baltimore sweeps the Jay's at home, we will enter Friday tied with Toronto. That would be a good outcome !

Respectfully disagree. They have to pass 2 teams. If they split with Houston they haven't gained any ground on them and they have 4 less games to do it in. And Seattle is playing the White Sox. So if we split with Houston we will likely lose ground to Seattle. And the Red Sox have the hardest schedule remaining. We need to be making up ground now.

It’s all gravy now in my book after this past weekend. A major benefit of the Yankees collapse is that it negates the possibility of the Red Sox having, say, an 85 win season and having to hear that described for the next calendar year as "finishing in last place 3 of the last 4 seasons."

Odds are that is the move, but I'd sure prefer one 6 man rotation - then Houck to the bully instead of Pivetta, in the 3+ inning role you mention. There are no off days until 9/7, and I think that Paxton and Pivetta would benefit from an extra day. Paxton, Houck, Sale, Bello, Crawford, Pivetta, Paxton.

It is impossible to anticipate this 10 games ahead with the way things have gone in 2023, but I do like this plan. Bello would be lined up to start the Aug 30 game vs. Astros which is my only Fenway game of the year. So, Yeah this is a plan !!!

Aside from it being a peek at how much worse it could be, their outlook affects the whole dynamics of our franchise pretty directly too. I'll be very interested to see what they do this offseason. Do they double down and add, say, Matt Chapman and Nola (or Ohtani...) and just blow through the luxury tax Cohen-style? Or do they reel back their $275 million payroll to duck below the LTT in the next couple of years, hope that Rodon returns to 2022 form and Judge stays healthy, and try to compete for a wild card spot?
Whatever they do, they're in a tough spot. Their pre-arb talent pool consists of Anthony Volpe and a bunch of relievers; their arb guys are Trevino, Cortes... and a bunch of relievers. Torres will be in his last arb year but already making 8 figures, which is hardly even a discount. They're basically where the Red Sox were in 2019 but with even more dead money on the books. Maybe they'll trade Judge to the Dodgers...

Volpe, Peraza and Pereira is a pretty nice crop of young guys that will be up next year for them
