Post by ephus on Jan 8, 2024 18:00:30 GMT -5
Off we go.
Picks are: 3 34 68 103 135 181 228
Needs? QB, WR, OL
Cap space. Massive. $72,366,858 (third-most in the league)
Pending free agents Ezekiel Elliott, RB Kendrick Bourne, WR Pharaoh Brown, TE Mike Gesicki, TE Hunter Henry, TE Trent Brown, OT Mike Onwenu, OL Josh Uche, LB Anfernee Jennings, LB Mack Wilson, LB Myles Bryant, DB Jalen Mills, DB Kyle Dugger, S Cody Davis, ST Matthew Slater, ST
Oh, and there is the whole coaching/gm thing.
It's been a long, long time since the Patriots went into an offseason with so many questions, draft capital and money to spend. So, in the words of TB12: LFG.

Miguel has their projected space just under $70m but he’s assuming they do a couple things like signing their PS players to futures deals. That being said, this figure includes over $13m for JC Jackson so their actual cap size is likely over $80m once he’s cut or restructured.

Yes, any way you slice it there should be enough to re-up some of the key guys and make some waves on the FA market. But to get it all done will require having a FO in place that can navigate free agency and the draft with a plan to quickly turn things around on offense, while maintaining a damn good defense.

You might want to add TE to the list of needs. Right now the only TE they have signed for next year is La'Michael Pettway.
Top FAs (name, age, snaps, pff receiving, pff rblock) Dalton Schultz 27 740 73/63 Hunter Henry 29 663 72/56 Noah Fant 26 570 64/60 Gerald Everett 30 570 68/51 Pharoah Brown 30 399 76/63
Top Draft targets Brock Bowers (Ga) - will go top 10 huge huge huge gap Ben Sinnott (Kan) Bryson Nesbitt (UNC) - slot WR? JaTavion Sanders (Tex) AJ Barner (Mich) Mitchell Evans (NDame)

Mac Jones being on the 24 Patriots to play for:
HC Bill Belichek OC Bill Obrien QBC Josh McDaniels
would be the most unexpected and chaotic outcome for this offseason.
And I'm kinda here for it.
TBC - the rumor is only that Josh could return if BB stays as HC.

Not enjoying Penix's decision making in this one so far. Seems a bit rattled. Also not liking the UW play calling. Good drive on a short field to salvage the half though. But Penix looks a lot different going against a top defense.
I do LOVE the UW CBs, they always seem to get their hands on the ball and tackle well. Trent McDuffie seems to have led the charge as a new CB-U.
JJ McCarthy with a couple good throws but basically a typical "Run the ball" game plan that led to big plays instead of grinds.
What do y'all think about Jim Harbaugh as a HC option? He seems a little set in his ways, but was solid in SF before he lost a power struggle. Not young (60). Guessing he's looking for total control, and not sure we wanna go down that road again. I'd rather he be someone else's problem/opportunity I think.

Going to need around 10 million for draft, about $6.5 for #3 pick alone.
Even with Injury, Judon likely wants a raise and I'd give him a two year extension if there's no health worries with his injury. So you could keep his number similar.
Jackson, Godchaux, Anderson and Mac Jones traded can give you well over 25 million more. There's certainly more, but those are the big ones that stand out.
So money isn't an issues, nevermind the crazy cap tricks you can use. If you are going after a new GM, #3 pick and tons of money makes you attractive. Especially if Bill is the coach.

The good news is that we can probably get Penix at 35 again (or whatever pick it is that we have, i forgot)

I’m passing on Penix, I hate that body language. The game is within 2 scores and you look like you’re out of the game? Terrible reads as well. Still a really good arm, so I’m still balling him over McCarthy comfortably.

ADD: the Titans operated with urgency over value, didn't consider trading Vrabel. Don't drag this out, Bobby, whatever THIS is. Bill Simmons proposed a trade to the Falcons of BB plus #34 for the #8. Seems like too much to me, and might take too much time. One more add: How awesome would a Belichick for Vrabel trade have been? The internet would explode!!!!!

I don't think the Pats should fire Bill because he is literally the GOAT, but if Kraft is deadset on this, he needs to hire Vrabel.

It would be cool but there was a zero percent chance Bill would go to Tennessee

And yet I would rather have one 10x more than the other It’d be interesting how we’d feel about Lawrence if he were here is all.

And yet I would rather have one 10x more than the other It’d be interesting how we’d feel about Lawrence if he were here is all. We would feel so much better. We wouldn’t have as good of a pick though, that’s for sure He had an awful rookie year with the worst coach of all time. He played injured down the stretch this year. Still was a solid QB. Not great. And yet he is still much better than anything we have- and probably anything we are going to get. And he still has upside left imo

Such an egregious example of data without context. The context that is CRITICAL in this discussion is the trend. They are heading in opposite directions. Take out their rookies years, and the comparison is laughable.
And I know we normally loathe just randomly dropping data points to fit a narrative (remember, I'm STILL one of the biggest Mac Jones apologists on here - though I DO have to finally admit he's probably broken beyond repair), doing so does demonstrate the improvement that has one franchise excited while the other is trying to figure out how to get their new starting QB.
EDIT - If you really hate dropping data points, just look at it that Mac has gotten worse in almost all of those stats while Trevor showed marked improvement in Year 2 and either improved or at least matched (or close to it) in year 3.
That is a VASTLY different story than what the 3 year aggregate says.

Top two QBs gone, I'd trade #3 pick and almost as good or better Mac Jones for him lol. Who thinks the Jags do that?

Kirk Cousins said today (I paraphrase): I'm rich thanks to football (& Jesus) so money not that important & am looking for a good football structure.
4 x 30M for the guy Mac was supposed to be?
