I'd have to see the terms of an extension with Bello before I'd be overly happy about it, he's at 1 year service time and I'd like to see them buy out at least two years of FA time to make it worth the while. Maybe 6 years with club options for a 7th and 8th? Extensions for pitchers at the stage Bello is at is kind of hard to pin down, they don't happen all that often. Strider is the only one coming to mind right now and he signed 6/75 with a club option to make it 7/97.

I sure hope this explains why the budget has seemingly been so tight this offseason and they've just been reserving cash for extensions

The lack of transparency is the Sox own doing. If they get him and Casas locked up that would go a long way to getting the pressure off the FO.

8/100 no options sounds like a decent deal for both sides. He can hit FA at 32.

Strider is most certainly the better pitcher, I won't argue that but somehow the Braves have some sort of magic dust they sprinkle on their extension offers to get their guys to sign them. I'm sure I'm missing some pitchers who have signed early extensions but I'm drawing a blank and Strider was the only one I could come up with. It needs to be enough money to entice Bello and enough term to buy out a year or two of FA to make it worthwhile for the Sox. I really can't come up with much that feels like it would make sense to both sides right now but hopefully something fair to both sides can be agreed on.

Garrett Whitlock - 4/18.75 plus two club options. Bello would get more but I'd guess the structure, at least, would be something like that; Bello's outcome is still pretty uncertain so they might just buy out his team control years then have some pretty healthy club options tacked on so that if he turns out really good the team comes out well but Bello would still be decently compensated.

Whitlock was 4/19 with $7.25 and $9 million effective club options. Actually more like 5/20 since he signed it at the very beginning of his second year and didn't get that year included in the deal.
Maybe Bello gets $2 million for his minimum salary years, 6/9/12 for his arb years adds up to 5/29 and then you get to whatever bargain the Red Sox get on his free agency years.

The Whitlock extension is probably a decent baseline, Bello perhaps deserves more in guarantees being that he is a bonafide SP where Whitlock's role when he signed that deal was and still is unknown.

I suppose it's worth noting that Bello signed for $28,000 out of the DR (per his SP page) - he may just be looking to lock in a fat deal as opposed to trying to get every penny possible?

Somewhere in between Greene and Whitlock I'd think

You could make a strong argument that the time to sign him to an extension would be after this season--i.e. see what you truly have with Bello. Is he truly the ace in waiting that us Red Sox fans want him to be or is he more or less a .500 pitcher (his record in 2022 was 2-8 and last year 12-11) who never quite reaches his potential and profiles more as a number 3 or 4 starter. With the jump in his innings pitched last year he is also a significant TJ injury risk.

W-L record is not a good way to gauge a pitcher, certainly when you consider both the 2022 and 2023 Red Sox were under .500. There also was basically no jump in his innings pitched last year, 2022 he pitched about 152 innings last year he pitched 157. There is significant TJ risk with literally any pitcher so to use that as a reason to not sign him to an extension would mean they'd be so risk averse they'd never sign a pitcher to an extension. Even if he profiles as a #3 more so than a front of rotation arm it can make plenty of sense to sign him to an extension now. A cost controlled #3 for the next 6-7 years would be a big boost to this organization.

Yeah, I agree that they should go ahead and sign him to an extension. The Sox certainly don't have many other pitchers like him.

Cora wasn't joking when he said he is a man now. IMO he looks ready to have his best season. This is the ideal time to extend him. If he comes in under Strider's deal - or even better Greene's deal, I think the extension will look incredible by year's end.

An added boost of the extension will be, based on the Twitterverse, the number is going to be way below what the average fan would expect because they don’t understand arb/pre-arb pay very well and/or that the team already has 6 years of control, so the vibes boost from signing it will be outsized.

Or on the flipside since Twitterverse is a cesspool they'll undoubtedly be people who complain the Sox didn't pay him enough and blame the org somehow.

Love this, but I hope they wait until the end of spring training. Even if a guy dominates during the spring, it won't add any value, but there's always the risk he blows out his arm. Just nit-picking. I love that they're doing this.
Now lock up casas and we're really cooking

Now lock up casas and we're really cooking I'd hate it if I believed the team were petty enough to be thinking "let's push every last bit of risk we can manage onto the kid from the DR by manipulating the timing of a mutually beneficial contract by a few weeks."

I really hope it's for 8 years. Either through options or whatever. Bello is the number one player right now in terms of future value right now and importantace. He's the number one guy every team is calling about in trades, that the Sox always turn down.
I don't really care about the ultimate dollar figure 80-160 million, he's beating that figure in terms of value the next 8 years.
